I asked for a raisem but no answer

I've been working for the same company for about 2.5 years now. In Jan, our office moved from the town I live in to a town 1.5 hours away. I now work remotely and travel to the office once a week.

On 2/12, I was in the office with my boss (this is rare) and I asked her if I could get a raise. I haven't had a raise in TWO YEARS and we don't have a policy in place. My boss was very thrown by my request for a raise and asked if she could think about it. I told her that was fine. I saw her this past week, since there was a team meeting but she never said anything.

I should also say that before the office moved, I asked her if our company would be paying for my gas to travel to the new office, since 1) I was hired to work in my town 2) everyone else in my company has their gas paid for by the company. My boss told me that she would have to check with our CEO and get back to me...haven't heard a word.

I don't know how to approach this raise. My boss is flaky and overwhelmed with her work demands coming from our parent company, but that's not my problem.

I would look for a new job, but my husband is finishing his PhD this summer and we don't know where he will find a job. I really need this raise

Re: I asked for a raisem but no answer

  • Have others received a raise in the past 2 years?

    Have your responsibilities increased?

Have you increased their bottom line in some way?

You need to show WHY you deserve a raise because of your increased value to them - (not longevity, or you need a raise for personal finances)

Absolutely to all of this. Unfortunately, you don't deserve a raise just bc of longevity with a company, not anymore at least.

BUT- if everyone else gets their gas and other travel expenses paid  for, then I would absolutely follow up with your boss about that again. Maybe ask again via email so you have a written record. Make sure you are polite and professional about it. I would include some sort of follow up date ex "I'll check back with you in 2 weeks". If you still haven't heard email her again or follow up in person.
