Collections agencies

My husband and I have discussed our finances with each other in depth--he told me he has never took out a loan though he tried once and could not get a guarantor.

There was one point where he had to pay off a debt to his college apartment. That was paid years ago. Today I got a call from a company that is looking for him...I looked them up and they collect money from student loans and I am really confused about this. I'm worried that either there is something I didn't know about or that he is being scammed. As far as I've known he's only ever been given scholarships and was not owing anyone money. He's explicitly told me that he doesn't owe anyone any money.

I'm trying to not let this stress me out but our old cable company kept calling us over a bill from when we moved and thought we cancelled our subscription. My husband said he eventually settled it and paid that debt weeks ago, but the collections company was still calling me last week.

Our old apartment that we moved out of charged us for more than a month of rent after our lease expired and I don't want to even get into how weird and confusing that was for us but we paid that as well. It just feels like we keep on getting hit up for something and I'm getting very frustrated.

As for scams, I know they exist. I've seen my dad get scammed with letters in the mail threatening to report him to collections agencies over something he never bought. What are you supposed to do when this happens?

Re: Collections agencies

  • Pull his credit report. See if there are debts that have gone into collections or not.
  • If your husband truly owes debts or has things in collections these will appear in his credit reports.

Each year, each person is entitled to one free report from each of the three reporting bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion).

It may be helpful to pull all three. They usually overlap, but not always.

  • Get the agency that is calling you to put the alleged debt in writing in the mail & ask for the supporting documents to show that that debt is due.  A reputable agency will do this.  A scammer will move on.
