Snoring (kids)

Does anyone have a child who snores? DD has always snored off and on, but within the past couple of weeks it has become extremely loud and constant. I've tried repositioning her from her back to her side, stomach, etc. and nothing works. She's not sick with a cold or anything, but it does seem like if she breathes out of her mouth its stops. She doesn't sound congested during the daytime though. I'm debating if she needs to go to the doctor for this or not. The little bit of Googling I've done indicates that she may, but I wanted to see if I could find someone with personal experience.

Re: Snoring (kids)

  • Noah was a snorer.  Like I could hear him through my entire house when he slept. I had asked the doctor about it - I was afraid no one would want to be his college roommate!  When he was smaller, he said just to keep an eye on it, but didn't seem concerned.

He ended up having enlarged tonsils and adenoids which caused sleep apnea.  (We did a sleep study and he stopped breathing 19 times an hour or something).   It was during a routine checkup that his doctor noticed how big his tonsils were and recommended we go to an ENT.

It probably couldn't hurt to take her to the ENT and have them check her adenoids. (If Noah hadn't have had the sleep apnea, they would have just taken his adenoids and not both, so I think the adenoids could cause the snoring on their own and that's something that you can't see).   I'm happy to say that after the surgery he is generally snore free.  Sometimes if he's really tired, he will snore, but it's not loud enough that I hear him downstairs anymore.  So yay, he will be able to be someone's college roommate!  ;)

  • See, this was my concern (apnea or adenoids). Do you think we should start with the pedi to rule out apnea then, or just take her straight to an ENT? I'm so bummed! I feel like she's relatively healthy, but then little things like this keep creeping up. I am hoping she won't have to have her tonsils/adenoids out b/c this will be the third time she's had to have anesthesia in the past 1.5 yrs!
  • I'd probably just go straight to the ENT if your insurance will allow it, cause most likely the ped will refer you to them.  (Sleep apena is a scary thing, but easily fixed, and they sleep so much better / restful when the issue is fixed! **IF** there is an issue with L)  I say this assuming that the ENT can both look at her adnoids as well as send her for a sleep study to diagnose the potential apena.....

Maybe call your ped and ask what they recomment?

I have no experience with this - Cori snores sometimes, but not all the time. Good luck!

  • We go to the same pedi practice, I believe, so I think you would probably be best to just go straight to an ENT.  They told us that we should have his tonsils looked at...but that was the extent of it.

And also, not every kid with enlarged adenoids needs a sleep study.  They're not fun - so I honestly wouldn't subject her to it unless there is a question about something.  Noah did it because his tonsils were big, but not enormous.  So there was a question on whether he needed just his adenoids removed or both adenoids and tonsils.  If he had passed the sleep study, they would have just taken his adenoids, which is a much quicker/easier surgery and a quicker recovery.

We went to the ENT dept at Children's Hospital.  Dr Chi did Noah's surgery and he was awesome.

Yes, we do, so that's helpful input! Why pay two copays and waste time we don't have! I wonder if the ENTs in Monroeville are any good. I hate going to Children's if I don't have to (it really stresses me out)!

  • Madi had her tubes in with a dr at Children's. Dr. Simons. Always had great luck with him. We got a second opinion (per our ped office) when Simons wanted to take her adnoids out in August and went that same day to Pittsburgh ENT that has an office across from Forbes in the same building as East Suburban OB/GYN. We saw Dr. Gottlieb. He is older and a little quarky-- wears one of those head things you would think ENT wore back int he day with the metal disc. He was great though. Looked at the tubes and pulled right out in the office (vs having her go under.) He also wanted to try some flonase and do an Xray before taking the adnoids out. I have heard wonderful things about Dr. Turner in that practice also.

    Thanks -- good to know!

  • She's going to Gottlieb -- they had an appt open tomorrow! Can't beat that -- we need to start getting some sleep!

    That's awesome! Good luck!

  • Good luck Mandy!
  • I love quickly scheduled appointments!  I hope the ENT is able to shed some light on the issue!
  • Good luck to you!  My daughter was diagnosed with enlarged adenoids and tonsils at 8 mos but was too young to do anything.  ENT said there was a chance she would grow into them.  At 2 year follow-up the problem was still there (always a mouth breather, could hear her breathing just when she was sitting down), and yes snorer too.  Sleep study confirmed sleep apnea (which I agree with pp-rough experience!)  Had both removed at 2 yrs-rough recovery but worth it!  We went straight to Children's...we are there a lot, so in my opinion, no better place!
  • Well, we went to our appt., but not much to report! He said her adenoids were slightly enlarged and prescribed Nasonex, but when we went to the pharmacy we discovered it was a $60 copay! Which I will pay if we definitely have to, but I called to see if we could use the less-expensive Flonase (which the pharmacist recommended, but needed dr approval), and never heard back. I need to call and bug them. If that doesn't work they'll do an xray on her adenoids. He's being conservative, which I appreciate, but we need to get the spray thing resolved!
  • I'm glad to hear that she probably doesn't need surgery or anything!  I hope you get the spray figured out soon.
