Hey! I used to be on the board quite often (not this one, but on the site in general), but haven't been in quite a while. I am back now looking for some insider help on looking for rentals in Alexandria, VA.
My boyfriend and I are getting ready to move out there this summer, and aren't sure where to start as far as finding an apartment. We have been looking on Craigslist, but we're hoping to find some more local, smaller management companies or landlords with properties that fit what we need.
As far as what that is exactly, we're looking for something older and simple. We're more than happy with something less luxurious and on the smaller side. We are hoping to find something in the Old Town area, or at least with a very high walk score. We aren't sure as far as what we want budget wise, but we're trying to get a sense of what you might call a "student" apartment might run in the area.
Does anyone have any resources they could pass along? Any management companies or leasing offices? Thanks in advance!
Re: DC/Alexandria Rental Advice Needed!
I lived in Cameron Station in the West End and really liked it. However, many people prefer Old Town, but for us Cameron Station was close enough to Old Town to easily go (10 min drive), but far enough that we could get a decent sized townhouse at a fairly reasonable cost. Many people in CS (and Alexandria itself) are military, so start your search at militarybyowner.com You could also contact the realtor who sold my house, I know he helps renters as well.

Yes, here is the walk score for a random address in Cameron Station. It is very walkable and even has a wonderful park bordering it.
There is a Harris Teeter grocery store less than a quarter mile away, a corner/convenience store within the gates of the community, a pizza shop within the gates of the community, a coffee shop within the gates of the community, a daycare/pre-school within the gates of the community (my daughter went there from 4 mos to 2 yrs and the teachers are wonderfully loving and they taught her a good deal), a dry cleaners within the gates of the community, a dentist within the gates of the community (great dentist, I used her too), and a spa/hair salon within the gates of the community (used it too, loved my stylist, can't speak to the others). During the spring and summer, there is also a farmer's market that sets up on Sundays inside of the community.
The community is like a little Mayberry, right down tot he New Urbanism architecture. It was awesome walking my daughter to day care in the morning in my sweats and then walking back home to get ready for work, lol.
Here is the community website.
