I am interested in lentils

But have never made them or even had them... any recommended recipes? Odds of EJ even trying them are probably low. They are not especially pretty.

Re: I am interested in lentils

  • I just had to google what they were, so I don't think I can be of any help to you.

  • maybe I should have just emailed Sundaygirl... I know she eats them. Wink
  • I use them in my decorative vases along with little pumpkins and fake leaves for the Fall.  That is all I know of lentils. :)
  • I usually just toss  some in my soup or plain rice or couscous for extra protein. Not a feature, just an addition. I'll see if I have any recipes on Evernote...

  • To the rescue!

Disclaimer: my kid is not much of a fan.  He's pretty on board with chickpeas and I consider that a win because I loooooooove chickpeas but I do lentils now and then for variety, healthfulness, and cuz they are hella cheap.

Here is a lentil soup from smitten kitchen that I made recently and was very pleased with.  Great winter soup.

Another smitten kitchen: curried lentils with sweet potatoes that I have not made but is definitely on my to-try list.

And I am drawing a blank on others at the moment.  But give them a try.  They are small and inoffensive.  And if you want chickpea recipes, hit me up.

  • Here's another for my to-try list: quinoa with lentil dal

  • AH... of course. Smitten kitchen rarely leads me the wrong way. I will start with one of hers. the sweet potato one sounds good!
  • I suggest using red lentils (they actually look orange)--they take a lot less longer to cook than the regular ones green/brown ones and they have a milder taste.  If you use them in a recipe that calls for the regular ones you can adjust your cooking time by about 15-20 min.  I don't have a recipe--my lentil soup tastes different every time.
  • I've only eaten lentils in Indian dishes and I've always really liked them. I think you attempt them and report back to us :)

I'm interested to hear. That recipe is exactly the type I've liked in restaruants. I'd love to hear that it's actually easy to do at home.
