He wants to Decorate

It seems everytime I bring up some kind of decorating idea to my FI he always shoots them down... We have both never lived on our own (besides college) so I think it's going to be hard to mesh our styles because we have both never had a place to do that on our own... I really don't know what to do.  We haven't even moved in yet!  Maybe it will get better by the time we move in.... Any advice?

Buying A Home

Re: He wants to Decorate

  • Compromise.

There's not much else you can do...

  • I agree, compromise!  When we moved into our first house had all sorts of ideas I wanted to decorate. The wife had her own. I decided to let her do the decorating and work in my ideas as she went. I was not led wrong by her and it turned out great. But both of you need to work and listen together and try to work his suggestions in so he feels like its his too. There is no other way. Good luck.
  • you should each decorate half of each room! Or everything could be white, everywhere... :-)

Realistically, of course you're going to have to compromise. I like having rooms/areas that are "more mine" that I can go crazy in. My office is COVERED with photographs and plants and things that are personal to me. Common areas of the house are more universal taste but still very us (giant purple octopus painting in the dining room!)

  • What about getting some decorating magazines, watch hgtv, or get on Pinterest together? Have him point out some things he likes, and show him some things you like. I'm sure you can find some common ground.
  • It's going to come down to comprimise. Look at Pinterest together as there are a ton of ideas. You can also do things like incorporate his favorite color(s) and then add your touch to the specific items.

  • Yes, as others have said you will need to compromise.
  • Why are you buying with someone you've never lived with before?  What's wrong with renting for a while?
  • We each chose a room and did what we wanted with it.  He chose the master bedroom, bathroom, and study.  I chose the downstairs bathroom, living room, and dining room.

The other rooms received a mix of both our styles and we compromised a lot on them (all 3 of his rooms are green, ugh). Is it possible that each of you choose rooms to decorate? If not, then take a look at different Pinterest ideas, HGTV online, or even just Google some different rooms and see what you both like. Then incorporate those styles into the existing home.

  • Thanks everyone!  We'll see what happens.  I talked to him and we compromised on what we could.
  • Walk through furniture stores and design centers to get an idea of your styles and how you can mesh.
  • I'm lucky, I have a laid back guy who could care less what the decorations look like. My suggestion to you though is talk to him about it. Obviously, you want parts of yourself in the decorations, and he wants his style in there too. Maybe he can pick the color, or the sofa, maybe the recliner (as long as it isn't the infamous man-cliner), then you throw in the small stuff, photos, flowers (the things that actually make room). Either way compromise is the ONLY way to do this. You guys didn't live by yourselves other than college so you gave up the opportunity to have a bachelor/ bachelorette pad.
