WWMMD Envelopes

So last fall I wrapped my head around a budget, and started doing things on the envelope system. I'm a girl who needs to know where money is going so it's nice to visually be able to do that. My one big splurge in my budget is my hobby which is Medieval Reenactment. So it gets it's own envelope. The events we go to have fees, and the clothes we wear cost money, sometimes there are hotel stays, etc. are all included in that. My question is, the gas it takes to get there and the meals eaten while there(usually a big group of us will go to dinner afterwards)...which envelopes should those come out of? My hobby one, or my gas/food ones. I know in the long run it doesn't really matter and doing it one way rather than the other won't blow the budget, but I'd like to get input from you guys.

Re: WWMMD Envelopes

  • Personally, I go to events so rarely that the entry fee comes out of my fun money, the gas comes out of my gas budget and I consider dining out comes from the food budget, but that's just me. I have a small garb wardrobe to pull from and if I need extra I can borrow from my SIL's wardrobe.

If its a weekend event/ camping I would probably include lodging/ extra food needed for the weekend part of the hobby budget.

  • I go to 2-3 events a month, and I have a pretty decent garb closet built up but I usually get one new good outfit a year.

What you suggested is pretty much what I was leaning toward, but I would rather have more consistency. Plus some events are 8+ hours away and that is pretty crazy with the gas budget since my commute to work is 2 minutes.

  • I would do the same - Gas comes out of the gas budget, food out of the food budget.  If I do have to stay overnight, I would take that out of the hobby envelope.

I see what you're saying in terms of which envelope, but if you wanted the gas to come out of the hobby envelope it could.  However, to be fair to your hobby budget and your gas budget, you would have to fill up before your event (that money would come out of your gas budget) and then again when you got home from your event (that money would come out of your hobby budget)

    Good plan! Thanks!

  • I'll just throw out something radical. How about sub-envelopes? Within your hobby envelope you can have gas, food, lodging, clothes, etc. envelopes. That way you'll know how you're spending your hobby money and it it won't mix with your other envelopes.

  • IMO, you are eating the meal either way, so that comes out of food budget.  The extra tank of gas would come out of fun money, since it is above and beyond the norm for your gas.

  • I would take it out of hobby money.  You're spending the extra gas and eating out (assuming you normally eat at home or spend less money eating out when not at an event) because of the hobby.  I think since they're not "normal life  occurrences", I wouldn't take them out of things I've budgeted for my daily life activities.  Obviously everyone has their own opinion of how they would divide it, you're the one that has to decide how it makes the most sense for you.

  • Thanks everyone. I think I'll pull meals out of my eating out envelope and take athlete010688's advice on the gas since that's the one I'm really worried about and it makes the most sense.
