Gift idea for a 5 year old boy?

I only have girls so I have no idea of what a 5 year old boy might want for his birthday.  I'd like to keep it around $20.  What's big with boys these days?

Re: Gift idea for a 5 year old boy?

  • Can't go wrong with anything Lego.  Depending on the kid, some are into superheroes, dinosaurs, trucks.  I like to give learning to read books at that age, too.

  • Mason is really into pirates and superheroes right now.

For general gift ideas, I would say books, puzzles, anything art related, games (Mason is really starting to get into games - chutes & ladders, candyland, memory, there is a game called Zingo! that he loves, etc.)

  • Legos are good.   Or a science experiment (Noah was in to stuff like that at that age).   Books, puzzles, art stuff.   Outside toys - you can probably find some at this time of year.
  • we went to a party last weekend, and I got a "color your own soccer ball" and a kite at target (I think the ball was around $13, the kite was maybe $3)  The ball was really cute, it was in the arts & crafts section.

  • My nephew who will be 5 soon is super into anything by Imaginex. I know they have options for under $20.
  • My nephew is 7. His favorite gifts are Legos and gift cards to Target and Chic-a-Filet. My mom saves all her $5 with purchase cards and sends them to him. He loves it and my sister loves the fact that if he wants something, he has to decide if it is worth using his card on.
  • Thank you all for the great ideas!  I never get to walk down the boy isle at the toy store so this will be fun.

  • My grandson loves anything Batman, Spiderman or Thomas the Tank Engine.
