Remind me again - flying with a toddler

The last time we flew with DS he was 6 months old. We didn't buy him a seat; he nursed on takeoff and landing and DH and I held him all other times. We took Southwest and carried on his infant carseat and the Snap n Go.

We're heading down to FL in May and this time he'll be almost 19 months.

1. Did you buy a seat for your toddler under 2?

2. Did you bring a convertible carseat (and did your toddler sit in it on the plane)?

Any other advice or tips would be great since I wasn't in toddler mode the last time the post came up.

TIA

  • We flew to the uk when Oliver was 19 months....he sat on our laps which was reallllly tough. If the ticket isnt expensive, then I'd get a seat. Last time we flew we took our britax convertible seat. It was so nice to strap him in and keep him

    confined!

  • We just booked a trip to visit the ILs in Arizona in three weeks so I will let you know how it goes!  J will be 15 months.

We are flying Southwest and did not book him a seat because it just isn't in the budget.  I am most concerned about him trying to wiggle off our laps and try and run around.

  • We booked m a seat for Thursday but he is two. We aren't bringing a car seat and honestly if it sucks. I'll buy a carseat in Chicago for the way back.

    2. Did you bring a convertible carseat (and did your toddler sit in it on the plane)? No carseat, we didn't need it for rental and she wouldn't have sat in it anyway. We got lucky and had a seat bnetween us unfilled, she ended up on my lap the entire time anyway

Lots of snacks, pack a few new toys or books, ipad for movies, crayons/paper.... Honestly, the flight to Florida wasn't too bad, T3 was actually the least annoying of the three on the flight

  • We are flying to Montana this July and I had to get Danica a seat since she will be 2+ (25 months). I kind of don't mind because I'm looking forward to putting her car seat on the plane seat and strapping her in. We can barely make a train ride to CC so there is no way we are making it to Montana with her not strapped down. We have to bring her car seat anyway for the rental car when we get there.

We flew with her to Grand Cayman when she was 9 months and that was a fine age to sit on our laps because she wasn't too mobile yet.

19 months is a tough call, though. It's right on the brink of where he may be OK and where it could be a disaster. At 19 months for Danica, she would be a disaster but she is a maniac in general. :) Good luck and have fun!

  • We started buying  Max a seat after our trip with him when he was about 7 months and he knocked OJ all over the guy in the window seat. We don't bring his carseat on the plane. Truthfully, we only buy the seat to have the extra space and so he can lie down and nap.

Tips: lots of snacks-some familiar, some new and interesting. Stickers. (and a pad of paper for him to stick them on) Ipad with whatever he likes.

Crayons are a terrible idea-Max always wants to draw on the tray or anywhere that's not paper.

Oh and for some reason, he loves "reading" the airline magazine and the skymall catalog.

Our philosophy is that a flight is no time to worry about how much screen time he gets or if he's eating too many snacks. As long as we can keep him occupied and not crying, it's a win.

  • I Fa real just bought 20 dollars in kids shows for milo. Ha you can imagine how worried i am about screen time for this flight.

  • Max also really liked a few apps that we bought-there's a grover/elmo one....monster at the end of the book or something. Also "Duck Duck Moo" has 2 he likes-Itsy bitsy spider and trucks.

(i should add he doesn't like them now. He liked them about 6 months ago)

  • Claire is 20 months and we are flying to Michigan tomorrow.  We didn't get her a seat, but we feel like it will be fine since there are two of us, at night, and it is only 1.5 hours.  If it was just me or the flight was long (or money was no problem), I'd get her a seat.
