Root canal

I have one today at 3. I am more nervous about this than I was for a c/s. Have any of you ever had one? Did they use novacaine or did they knock you out? I think it's the idea of getting knocked out that makes me nervous, since I've never had that before.

Re: Root canal

  • I've had one before and they just gave me novacaine.  The only reason I didn't like it was because it was my upper molar (last tooth in my mouth) and it was pretty high up there, so sitting in the position I was and having TMJ was awful!

Were you give the option to get a porcelin (sp?) or a gold crown?  If it's a molar that's never seen, I would highly recommend getting the gold.  It's a little more expensive, but they last so much longer!  My dad's porcelin (sp? again) has cracked numerous times. Obviously if mine were in the front or seen often, I would have opted for the porcelin (I suck at spelling this word today!)

  • Ugh, I hate the dentist/anything to do with teeth. I haven't had one but my mom has had several, they just gave her novacaine. Good luck!

  • Thanks, ladies! I feel a lot better know I will most likely just get novacaine.

We didn't talk about crowns, it's the third tooth from the back on my upper right side, so probably porcelain? I don't know. Part of me would love a gold one not only because they're better quality, but so I can be a crazy lady and show off my sparkly mouth. lol

  • I think if they were going to knock you out they would have told you not to eat anything for so many hours beforehand. At least they did when I had my wisdom teeth out. I hope it goes smoothly!

This.  I don't believe the routinely put people under for root canals.  You'd have to have a driver and sign paperwork and everything.

I just want to say good luck!  I know some people who have had them and have not felt much pain, so hopefully your dentist is good and you fall into that category!

  • Good luck! I've had three with crowns. The worst part is the soreness the next day from holding your mouth open. The actual procedure wasn't painful at all.

This. I had my first root canal done a few months ago. I was very numb but awake, the procedure was a breeze and i think it took maybe an hour for everything to be done. I had my root canal on my 2nd to last molar left bottom side and the doctor recommended I get a porcelain crown.

    GL!!

  • Thanks, ladies! It went well. My mouth hurt like hell from having to keep it open for an hour and a half. I'm taking Tylenol and hope I won't be too sore tomorrow.
