Part-Time/Second Job

It's often suggested on here to pick up a part-time/second job. What do you ladies suggest as the best "bang for your buck" waitress, retail, bartending, something from home?

Re: Part-Time/Second Job

  • I think it depends on a few factors.  what do you have experience in?  If you have worked retail quite a bit in the past I would suggest that. If you need flexibility as in want your weekends off I would suggest part time office work so that way you are done by 5pm and don't work weekends.  If you have a talent of some sort I would suggest trying to do that first by doing a side business.  You would make more money doing that than retail.

  • PT bank teller.

Sundays off. Bank holidays off. Closes each day at 5 or 6pm...can't take work home.

  • I guess I should say I already have a full time job, and am in-between contracts on my second job(won't start up again until August). I'm looking for something that would be evenings and weekends as I work everyday from 7:30-4.

ah ok.  In that case I would think retail or waitressing would be ideal for you.  I have never worked in the restaurant business but would assume you would make more money in being a waitress/bartender because of the tips.  I always hated retail jobs

I have experience in retail but didn't love it. Waitressing makes me nervous, but I could always give it a go.

  • I second the waitress/server suggestion.  I know it is very easy to get a retail job (I just did this and got hired on the spot).  However, the pay is minimal and nowadays it seems customer service is a lost art as retailers are more interested in signing people up for their rewards program and/or credit card and not so much in creating a great shopping experience. (A little rant-y I know...sorry)

    Best of luck!

If you are nervous about waitressing, I would recommend a job in another type of food service- like a bakery or ice cream parlour. You still work for tips, and you aren't really a waitress. When money is tight in our house, I pick up a few shifts at an ice cream parlour I used to work at when I was in school- the manager and I stayed in touch, so she is always able to squeeze me in. It's easy work, and you get tips, and like PP said- you don't take work home with you!!! GL

  • Bartenders tend to make more than servers but it depends on the place.  Old school / nightclubs people will throw you $1 per drink if they are paying cash.  On a credit card / tab you'll probably make the same 15-20% as the servers.  Overall hospitality pays beter than retain but the hours can be long.  Do you really want to work on Friday & Saturday until 2-3 a.m.?

Work from home rarely pays but it can.  When my parents were ill, I had a few writing gigs that paid well that I was able to do sitting in their hospital rooms.  Thank heaven for wi fi.

I use to work at NY and Co when I was in college.  They really pushed selling that credit card of theirs.  We would get in trouble if we didn't have 3 card sign ups a week.  they would keep track.  I am not a sales person and don't like doing it.  I got all my friends to come up and help me out by applying for a card, but eventually ran out of friends.  They made me watch another video about selling that card. Then they docked my hours when I didn't open enough cards.  I quit because I though it was so stupid.  Ended up working at Kmart for a little bit instead.

  • I think retail/restaurant would be most suitable for you as well. I keep going back and forth if I want to get a second part-time job. I work 7:30am - 3:30pm, so I could easily pick up a couple nights/week.  We're not "struggling" per se, but we could definitely use the extra money.

The only thing stopping me from getting a part-time retail/restaurant job is the weekends. I remember I lost out on a lot of family stuff when I worked at a restaurant through high school/college, and I don't want to miss out on family stuff.

  • Retail will probably be best or office cleaning (not sure of pay but you don't have customer headaches like retail). I would suggest looking at local classifieds to see what you may find. You may be surprised. I have a part time job at a gym I was going to. I work the desk at night, no sales required but if someone wants to join, I do give them information & can sign them up. Nice part is that I save on the cost of the membership. I had to drop membership because I've picked up more nights working so no time to work out, but it's only 5 1/2 hours a week & the pay is really good.

  • My 2nd/part-time job is selling Tastefully Simple.  So there's the option of doing a home-based party business. You can do it in jewelry, food, cooking utensils, candles, etc. There are a lot of options, and the pay structure is pretty good with all of them.  I strictly only do parties Monday-Wednesday at night, and am done and home by 9pm at the latest (work M-F 8:30-5 at FT job).  This works perfect for our family, because I can be home on the weekends and don't miss out on a lot of things.  You also make your own schedule. So if you have something going on one night, then you don't do a party that night.  Or if weekends work best, then you do parties then.

It takes some work, but the income is pretty good. I bring in anywhere from $100-$1,500 a month in extra income from it.

    Just another option.

  • For MANY years I bartended at a local theatre.  We got paid min wage + tips (not min waitressing wage, reg min wage) so they money could add up.  In addition we had ballrooms where we had private events (lots of corporate events and weddings) and it was possible to make a lot of money at those as well.  It was an ideal PT job and allowed me to save a ton of money to buy my first place and travel and do lots of fun things.
  • It can be very difficult to get a serving position without experience (even more so for bartending). I would recommend applying for a hostess position. Many get minimum wage + tip out from the servers, and it tends to be very flexible and doesn't require previous experience.

I second the pp who mentioned office cleaning, although this can be very physically taxing if you've already worked a long day at your full time job.  Other options could be asking for additional hours/work/raise at your existing job, babysitting, pet-sitting, or tutoring, if you have any experience in those.
