The Pope has left Vatican City

As a Catholic, this is such a weird feeling - we technically do not have a "leader" right now, until the Conclave votes on a new Pope.

I truly hope that the Cardinals realize that today's youth, while having the strong foundation of the Church, are demanding some changes, too.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Re: The Pope has left Vatican City

  • I am not Catholic. Or religious at all. But I agree the church could use a little PR bump. A spokesperson who is more likeable. Charismatic... And know quite a few people who would agree that some changes would be good.
  • I agree.  I am hoping for some change.  As a Catholic, I feel like we are still in the dark ages in a lot of ways.  Other Christian religious have moved forward (having women leaders among other things).

  • I agree there needs to be change.  Although, for me personally, I don't think there will ever be enough change that would resolve the issues/struggles I have with being Catholic (or a "not really practicing Catholic", I guess.  I'm not really sure what I am.).

First and foremost, they need to address child abuse within the Catholic Church.  This should be done immediately, aggressively, and transparently.  From there, I think there are several issues where I would like to see a more modern/progressive view, or at least not such an "anti" view, which will obviously take time.  Otherwise, I don't know.  Like I said, I struggle with being Catholic, so my opinion is probably not fair or realistic.

  • Well, DH is Russian Orthodox so the Roman Catholic church is progressive comparitively! Women aren't even allowed on the altar and if they do enter certain parts it has to be re-blessed.  Although Orthodox priest must be married to be assigned a church.

Anyhoo, I think there are a lot of things that need changed and addressed but I also think there are things that should stay the same. I am not for women priest, I actually think girl altar servers is odd but that is me, too much Catholic school. I like the tradition that the church has.

My Aunt (by marriage) is Byzantine Catholic...we went to her sister's wedding years ago and I almost fell over when I heard parts of the wedding ceremony!

Yeah and Byzantine is a between Catholic and Orthodox or as Nathan would say. Orthodox Lite!

Beautiful traditions but intense! I went to Easter Vigil with his family once, we left at 8 pm, I got home at 6 the next morning. Oh, and it was in Russian.
