Honeymoon After Half a Year of Marriage

My DH and I were on a tight budget for our wedding in October, so we never took a honeymoon. Thanks to our tax refund, we are taking it this summer! Yay!

Thing is, we don't know where. We are still not rolling in dough and we don't have passports so no place that requires one. We are living in IL, open to driving or flying. We are considering Charleston, SC. I would love to spend time on a beach but not the whole time, cuz its not really the DH's thing. Something romantic. Any suggestions??

Re: Honeymoon After Half a Year of Marriage

  • What about Puerto Rico?  No passport required, and lots of non-beach things to do.
  • DH and I were in a similar position.  We were married in October but he was in grad school and couldn't take time off after the wedding.  I work retail and couldn't take time off in December.  There wasn't a time for us to take a honeymoon until the following summer.  We planned it like a honeymoon and even referred to it as our honeymoon, however it felt just like any other vacation when it was all said and done.  I want to warn you that it probably won't feel the same as it would have immediately after the wedding.  I just don't want you to be disappointed.

That being said, what about the Boston/New England area?  You guys could look at staying in a few charming B&Bs and the possibilities are endless for activities.  There are some great beaches up there for you. Boston has so much history (as well as aquariums, museums, etc. like many cities) to offer if cities appeal to you.  On top of that, there are tons of options for hiking and exploring the outdoors if that appeals to you.  We have been to the White Mountains in New Hampshire and loved it.  Our absolute favorite place was Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, ME.

As for Charleston?  I've never been but it is on my travel bucket list for sure.

Vacations are what you make of them.  I have yet to travel to some place that I didn't enjoy!  I hope you and your new husband have a wonderful time!

  • why not just get passports?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Florida? It's warm, beachy with other stuff too, and nice and touristy.
  • I would suggest checking cheapcaribbean.com for Puerto Rico - no passports and I just saw a few deals on there this afternoon for PR since they are having a big sale on the website.

The suggestion of New England is also a good one.

For some reason formatting is acting up. I highly recommend Charleston, it's a romantic and lovely town. However, in summer it can be insufferably humid and hot. If you still want to go, look into the French Quarter Inn, we stayed there for a business trip and it's romantic and gets 4 Diamonds, 4 Star awards all the time. I LOVE New England, and while it can be muggy in the summer, it's not as hot as Charleston. If you like history, Charleston and Boston area are both good. If you plan it around the 4th of July you can see the Boston Pops on the the river, see the fireworks. I took my kids there a few years ago for 4th of July and it was really fun. My favorite recommendation if you have never been is to see Washington DC. It's full of history, the museums are free, and while it's crowded in the summer, there are so many different places to go that you can space things out. You won't need a car, because you can fly into any of the airports and use mass transit to get to downtown. Whatever you decide, sign up for weekly Top 20 deals at www.travelzoo.com. Also check hotels and restaurants at www.tripadvisor.com. I used them liberally when planning our CA honeymoon in 2011. I was never disappointed with a choice I made from the reviews written by real people.
  • Puerto Rico is a great idea! Plus you have the rainforests and lots of stuff to do. Old San Juan is a lot of fun. If that's too much money, SC is another great option or Martha's Vineyard/Cape Cod. USVI's are amazing and no passport but might cost a little more money. You could always rent a condo to save a little money but still get to stay on an amazing island.

  • I live in Charleston and it is a wonderful Honeymoon spot if you like historic towns, food, beaches, and more food. There are tons of cute boutique hotels and bed and breakfasts located downtown, or a gazillion hotels just outside of downtown where you could stay for very cheap. You can take a ghost tour, carriage ride tour, walking tours, boat tours, etc lots of touring can occur, haha. Of course, in summer time I would not be caught dead sitting on a crowded carriage in the heat, maybe a boat tour. There are also awesome dinner cruises that go around the harbor so you can see the fancy houses along the battery from the water. There are three main beaches: Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms, they get more expensive in the order I listed.

The other option people keep mentioning is San Juan, PR. I've been there and it was really fun. Feels a lot more exotic than Charleston, but it's not that expensive and no passport required.

  • You can chose the Thailand that is the favorite place for young ones to come and enjoy. It's really a cool and nice place with the best establishment of Samui vecation villas.

  • I'm in a similar situation. Got married in July '12 and we had another reception in my hometown (outside the US) in October '12 and never had a honeymoon after both occasions. We're finally going on a honeymoon next month to Kauai, HI. We got all these activities planned out (ziplining, kayaking, hiking, snorkeling) so you can definitely pick a beachy destination and not be at the beach all the time :)

  • Thanks for the advice everyone!

I think we're looking at a roadtrip to Charleston, SC, and then down to Savannah, GA before coming home. We will probably plan a few nights in Charleston and then wing it from there.

Someone mentioned getting passports, and the reason we don't is because they cost $165 ea. and that would significantly cut into our budget. Even the cheapest all inclusives, once you add passports and flights, are out of range.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. I'll have to let you know how it goes!
