Does making school loan payments help credit score?
Hi all, I was wondering if you had heard this and if it was true.
My credit score is not good due to me screwing up with credit cards when I was 19. I'm 25 now. My school loan payments are due to start up in May.
A friend told me that if I make my payments on time, it will help my credit score go up. Is this true? Or was she wrong?
Thanks in advance!
Re: Does making school loan payments help credit score?
Yes, demonstrating a record of timely payments will improve your score over time. The key word though, is time. Give it a good year of timely payments on *everything* - your loans, credit cards, rent - and you should start to see improvement.
Making the payments and making them on time will move your score up over time.
To echo the PP, it takes time to rebuild your score.
And you also should make on time payments on your other debts, bills and any other obligation you have and are trying to clear up from the past.
Like PPs - building/bettering your credit takes time. It may seem like a PITA, but it's the way it works.
