If you have kids...or if you don't

What is your limit for time away for vacation?  We have only gone away with the kids for more than a week once when we went to central England and London for 5 days each.  We used to think our limit was around 8 days before we had kids because after the 8th day we would start to want to be back home mostly because we missed our dog.  We still love our dog but now on vacation we are away with the kids and I definitely could have spent more time in England.  And I really wish we had more time for our upcoming vacation to Hong Kong, it looks unlikely that we can move our flight so it will be 9 nights, 8 days and I would love two full-weeks which is impossible this time of year for us.

So what is your preference?  We are likely doing Aruba next year and we will do 11 or 12 days for the first time ever.

  • i'm not really sure what you mean-the length is based on the trip and work constraints. since we dont want kids it has nothing to do with that.

i miss my dog too but i wouldn't cut a vacay short for it. one of our trips to italy (in sept/oct 2010) was 19 nights. we go to cancun/rm every december for 10-14 days.

of course my preference would be for longer vacations.....maybe i'm missing the point of the question..........

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • We go for as long as we can without the kids missing too much school. In NJ there's a week in November when school is closed for 3 days and that has become our annual vacation week.

So if we tack the weekend before and after on we can take 9 days total.

So far we've only gone to Disney World as a family and 5 nights was enough.

We're doign 6 nights in Jamaica this November, then a Disney World/Disney Cruise vacation in November 2014. That trip will be a week total.

We plan to book a Med Cruise and that will be longer -- esp because of travel to and from the port-- so we might do that in the Summer, in which case we will have no restrictions.

H & I both get plenty of vacation days from work (20 days a yr + earned comp time) so we are not limited by that. It's more funds and the kids school/sport schedules.

  • If I had unlimited time off and money, and it was a great destination, I don't really have a maximum time length.  The only time I feel ready to get home from a trip is when we visit my family (and that's not a vacation!) and I usually can only handle 3-5 days there.  The longest vacation we've taken with the kids so far has been a week, and both times we've taken them for a week if we had unlimited time and money I would've been perfectly happy extending those trips.

  • It really doesn't bother us to be away from home for long periods as a family as long as we have a trusted person to check on the house while we are gone.  If jobs and school allowed for it, we'd load up an RV and hit the road for months.

  • 3 weeks seems to be my limit. That's how long I went to Ireland and was really ready to go home by the end. Same with Kenya.

We planned our honeymoon for 3 weeks. Anything shorter than a week (if it's out of the country) is too short. If family is involved, 2-3 days!

  • We were away for a month in October with our daughter and it was great.

  • I've been away from home for months for work, but my DH was home taking care of the house and cats. For vacations, my time away from home is really dictated by how much vacation time I have. I've taken off a month before, but saved up my vacation time for two years, never taking more than a day off, to do that. Never taking za vacation for two years is just highly unrealistic to do now, with so many things going on. I do start to worry about my kitties after about two weeks, but as long as I can check in with the pet sitter, I feel better. I do not have any kids, nor do I want any, so that will never be a consideration for me.

  • I do think it's a little rough for the younger ones. Last year we took our 2 and 4 year olds to Hawaii and they were pretty tired out after 5 days. The last day we were there, I could tell they needed some much needed rest, even with sleeping 10 hours every night and the younger one took a nap every day. Yours are a little older so I'm sure they can handle more. 12 days in Aruba sounds amazing! I'm sure your kids will do great.
  • we don't have a limit, it more depends on where and time off from work and school. i spent a month traveling out west with my son when he was 7 months old. we also did 3 weeks in hawaii with him when he was about 1 1/2. they are probably the two most. on average, we usually do a week, 7 nights i would say. He is a good traveler and adapts really well even with time changes. Or at least so far. I say go for it, you can always take a couple of days for down time if it's getting to be too much for them.

     have fun!

  • Time off is really our biggest factor.  I only get two weeks of vacation from work, and we usually prefer to go on a week long vacation twice a year rather than a two week long vacation once a year.

For example, last year, we went to Hawaii for a week in March, then Roatan for a week in September.  This year, however, we are going to Italy for two weeks since it would be difficult to travel that far for any less amount of time.

  • I love travel but after ten days I'm homesick and ready to go home.
