Hi...I was hoping someone could chime in on this and give some perspective.
DD was born with blocked tear ducts (nasolacrimal duct obstructions), which is fairly common in newborns and infants. Basically it means her tears don't drain properly and she looks to be crying all the time. She has not had any infections and her doctor said it typically goes away on its own as the child grows and passages for tear drainage enlarge on their own. She has goopy mucus on her eye lashes and her eyes are always drenched in tears.
DD just had her 12 month visit. The ped gave my DH a referral to a specialist for children to go if we want to see about this issue since DD hasn't gotten any better in a full year.
Does anyone have any expereince with this issue in later stages of infancy and toddlerhood? Did you see a specialist or do a procedure to open up the ducts?
Thanks.
Re: DD: 12 Months: Blocked Tear Ducts
Yes, my DD4 had the same issue. We too were told to wait and see if it went away and it never did. We saw a pediactric Opthamalogist and she did have surgery when she was around 14 months old. It was a very simple procedure and was done quickly. Of course I was nervous, but I had nothing to be nervous about. This is very common.
When she woke up from the surgery her eyes were red and her tear ducts were very slightly bloody. We had to put some drops in her eyes for about 10 days and then she was fine. No more goopy eyes and she hasn't had a problem with them since.
I'm leaning heavily toward taking her to the pediatric ophthalmologist. If she ever cries for real, her entire face is immediately covered in tears.
What was your main determining factor for making the call to take your daughter at 14 months instead of waiting longer?
Thanks for replying.
Our Pedi said that if it hadn't cleared up by that time, then she would need surgery.
Once we did take her to the Opthamalogist he agreed and said she would need the surgery.
I am glad we did. She recovered nicely and her eyes were finally clear.
