Taxes (yes another money post)

So I finally completed my taxes. And yes of course owed state tax ($408, so could be worse) but I was extremely happily surprised about the federal refund. Apparently, Jared's big money maker last year, he put Single for his W-4 form and they took out about 8600 for federal tax, so total we paid about 11k for federal, which is apparently 5800 too much. So yay! We get some back. I wasn't expecting anything so I'm a little worried I did something wrong, since of course I'm OCD/paranoid, but I checked all the numbers 3 times. Soooo basically I'm a hesitant happy right now. Seems a little surreal.

Any other happy/surprising moments for others? :)

  • I left mine at single and we're getting about $4500 back.  Just can't figure out why I'm only getting $94 back from state......

  • That's wonderful! I made DH switch to single O. That reminds me I have to do the same for one of the school districts I work in. Hopefully next year we'll get a decent refund expecially since we'll have a baby to claim as a dependent.

Married the love of my life on 1-21-12. Our princess arrived on 5-28-13.

You left your w-4 as single or your tax form? I feel like a noob. This is the first year I've had to do taxes on my own, since I've been in school for so long and my parents could still claim me as a dependent. I owe the state 408 but I had to check numbers to make sure we really are getting 5800 back from federal. I was crossing fingers that we would break even haha. I'll take this instead haha

I have a house with a mortgage on it and was getting close to the point of not being able to deduct the interest anymore.  Figured between that and getting married I would leave it at single until I figured out what it would do to my taxes.  Even now we're thinking of leaving it at single at least for the time being.

  • yeah for finishing taxes and filling for FAFSA! Sounds like you were busy!

We got our tax refund yesterday. I am really excited to get a rather large chunk of my debt paid off and get one step closer towards returning to school. I'll still owe about 600 dollars but T gets a bonus in April and I've been making small payments to them. BUT, part of me wishes that we could use it to pay our car down, keep it for a down payment on a house, heck even start reserving things for our Disney trip. I told T I felt really bad. He told me not to worry about it and he knew how important this was to me. = ) Hopefully once all this is taken care of, it'll be less stressful.

     01.21.2012---> I married a redhead I'm crazy about.

  • That's great about your refund!

Ben and I both put our W4s as single as well. I know that people in finance say not to aim for a refund because it's like giving a free loan to the government, but for us it almost acts as a savings account. If we had the money during the year, we'd probably end up spending it on things we don't need. When we get refunds, we put it toward any big expenses we might have.

I normally aim for a small refund each year.  I don't want to owe, but don't want a large interest free loan to the government either.  Once things settle out, we'll make out adjustments.

  • I didn't expect to get anything back so it was a nice pleasant surprise. I'm happy that I'm getting anything. would've been nice to have all that money sooner so I wasn't as stressed haha but better late than never!

haha love this. It is liking a "don't touch" savings account. just without the interest haha

  • I am not one to lend the gov't that much money. I would always like a small refund, but again, I have no problem saving money either.

We still have to decide how exactly we are going to file. We aren't sure, because both of us can be claimed as a dependent, and our parents would get a bunch of money back for us, but we get more money back for filing jointly.  My dad offered to pay us half of the difference, but FIL offered no such thing. I am torn between asking, because he is going to get a lot back because of it.

  • And J thinks that I shouldn't ask either because it is only $60.

$60 dollars can pay for a lot. Jared's dad texted him a few weeks ago telling him he was just going to claim him as dependent. When we told him no, he got quite rude. This transition is tough. Even my dad joked about how he can't claim me anymore. At least he doesn't pay for me haha.

I'd say if you have the type of relationship, you can bring up how you are debating on filing as independent, but your dad mentioned that he claimed you, he'd give you half. See what your FIL says to that?

  • I remember that transition period too from being on my parent's taxes to being on my own.  I think you should do what is best for you guys even if it does make your FIL cranky.

We got some back but nothing compared to what we did when we weren't married.  I know I changed my filing status to married and I think DH did too.  Maybe we should change his back to "single".  We might wait one more year though since I'll be quitting to stay home.  That will definitely change our total income plus we'll have a dependent next year.  So I guess we'll wait and see.  It is like a free savings account but without the interest.  Not the best investment but if you have a hard time saving, it's better than nothing.

I already slyly mentioned something like this to my FIL. He didn't offer anything. So I really don't know what to do. I really want J to ask because it would be so much easier.
