If you've been to St Lucia, please advise

Hi all,

Our first trip to St Lucia is coming up in early April! We only have five days, and for the first two, we booked an apartment in Soufriere. Since that place isn't available for the rest of our stay, we booked Bay Gardens Inn in Rodney Bay for the next three nights but are now second-guessing this decision. From what we read, Rodney Bay seems a much busier/more touristy place than Soufriere, and we are very into nature/wildlife and not at all into nightlife... :)

Considering this, would you recommend staying in Soufriere for the entire time and taking all our land and water trips from there? Or will we miss out on the north of the island? Any insight greatly appreciated!

  • We went to St. Lucia on our honeymoon.

We stayed at the Anse Chastanet, which is near Soufriere.

You can opt to climb/hike Gros Piton, which is very close by to both. FYI: It is strenuous.

Soufriere is a small town, there are a few shops, a quaint church, and the rest is very much like what you would see in a developing nation.

St. Lucia - outside of the all inclusives resorts isn't necessarily desirable (but that could be personal opinion too). I just know most travelers wouldn't want to stay off properties.

Anse Chastanet is very much a non-American resort. It has a library there and it's books are French, German and English. There is opportunity for snorkeling, mountain biking, sea kayaking, and other excursions you can take.

The accomodations are all enclosed with screens only. At night the staff comes to your room while you are at dinner at lights a mosquito coil and puts your mosquito net down over your bed.

DH and I had no trouble with mosquitos. But if you want nature, you will get it here. It's in your face.

The beach is small but extremely private from outsiders. There is tennis too.

  • Thank you! Yes, I've read a lot of great things about Anse Chastanet, but it is quite beyond our budget :) We just booked a more affordable place right on the beach, The Still Beach House.

We had a discount on AC. There's no way we could have afforded it otherwise!

We just got back from St Lucia last week & stayed at Stiil Beach! We loved this place. It's right on the beach & very chill. Everyone working there, including the owners were very nice. Ask to stay in Room #3 if available, it has the best view. Enjoy!

Oh, this is such good news! So glad you had a good experience there - I gathered from the reviews that it could be hit or miss. Thanks a lot for the room tip!

I need to put a review up on trip advisor too. I was not very sure about it with all of the not so good reviews. My boss always says people want a five star service on a white castle budget, lol. It's very reasonably priced for St Lucia, so you're not getting a luxury resort but it was still clean & great to stay at.

Yes, it would be great to have a fresh review!

BTW, do you mind it I ask: did you book through a site like Expedia, or directly with David? For our dates, the rate advertised on Still Beach home page was waaaay more attractive than at hotels.com and such, so we just exchanged emails with him. It seems pretty informal -  he didn't charge a deposit, and payment is due at check in - I guess I just want to be sure that this agreement is as binding as any in a well-run business, and there will be a room waiting for us...

We got his e-mail & booked directly through David. It was informal with us too but we did pay a $300 deposit by giving him our cc#. Then we paid the remaining balance when we checked out along with our food/bar tab. I'd maybe just double check with him on if he needs a deposit from you. Have a great time!
