Has anyone ever been to one of these?
I am making it my workout goal to run the whole DC Color Run in September.
I also wanted to do the Philly Psoriasis run since its something that is really close to me but its the same day as the one we are doing together.
Re: Color Run
The Rowdy Roberts
there is one in Philly in July too
The Rowdy Roberts
you could totally be ready by July! the only thing I worry about is the heat in July
The Rowdy Roberts
Oh that would be a nice sweaty color filled mess. Heat for a first 5k might not be a good idea. Those races always fill up so quick. Would you be interested in looking into the DC one in the fall with me?
yes, totally

That's exactly why I can't probably ever do the one in Philadelphia. My neuro is already kind of freaked out I want to run in late March.

Is it because of hot hot your body gets while running?
Actually, I've noticed my hands get warm before anything else. Which is so weird.
Campbell's Soup version of my story: I have something called Moyamoya [if you want to read about it, there's a tab at the top of my blog (link in siggy) that will give you more information than I can right now] & I've had two brain surgeries. Because the blood vessels in my brain are already working at full capacity - that is it say, they're as big as they're going to get & if they have to work harder, they'll probably blow (I think that's how it was explained) - it's not a good idea for me to get dehydrated, which is one of the biggest worries my neuro has. He's pretty much expressly forbidden me from running in the summer/heat.
I e-mailed him to ask him about the Phillies 5K & he basically said, yes, you can run but drink lots of water.
To put what he's worried about in perspective, have you ever been so sick you can't keep anything down? The last time I was horrifically ill, I was about an hour away from needing to go the hospital to be put on IV fluids, and that was only after being that sick for about 16 hours.

Oh my goodness. Yes, now I understand your doctors reasonings. At first I was thinking it was an overheating issue that would cause almost a stroke like effect. I would be screwed because I sweat like a man. How do you maintain proper hydration levels on a daily basis? Are there things you have to avoid eating, drinking or doing because of it?
I actually had a TIA (mini stroke) in August 2010, which led to my eventual diagnosis. Fun times.
I don't have to avoid eating anything, but I do take a statin for my cholesterol & I'm on blood pressure medication. I also take a baby aspirin & a fish oil capsule every day.
I have to avoid drinking to excess, but I never really did that anyway. I carry a bottle of water with me wherever I go & I get really cranky when I fly, because I hate spending money on water after I've gone through security. I've also pretty much always had the world's smallest bladder, so there are some days when I feel like I should just set up my laptop in the bathroom with me.
It's something I've very much learned to live with. I have to check with him before I do anything major, but I don't mind. I can email him at 7 on a Saturday night & get a response within about half an hour. In fact, that's how it went when I asked about the 5k.
