So, the cabinet/trim guys are starting on our house Wednesday and I was given some info to ponder this weekend and I can't make up my mind. For an island to be usable in your mind, what is the smallest it should be?
As the kitchen was planned it would have a 45* angle sink that the breakfast bar would wrap around. After seeing how small the island is I *may not* be totally thrilled.
My options include:
**Making my sink look into the living room area and squaring the counter so that I can add about 2 feet onto my island. To hopefully draw a picture in your mind I would have three vertical counter top areas and then at one end (the space between dining and kitchen I would have a horizontal bar that would connect to one of the vertical counters. (This gives enough space for 4 bar stools, 2 on each leg of the L.) The other end of the kitchen has double ovens and pantry so no real counter space.
**Leaving it as planned with a smaller than desired island. This isn't bad, I just don't have the big island I envisioned and had drawn. I get to keep the sink at an angle, I have no idea why I want it at an angle.
**Forgoing the island altogether... this really isn't an option in my mind because I have way too much space in the kitchen and would probably be ticked for years to come.
So, who wants to come help me figure out what to do. lol BTW, do not ever look at houzz, I have been sucked into that stupid sight and I can't break the habit. lol
Re: Kitchen question
Okay, I can't choose because I'm too confused and can't picture it. But, I did want to add that I have the smallest island possible. 2.5' x 2' Not what I wanted, but we needed space to move around. I almost scrapped the entire island because I thought "what's the point?". Anyway, I do all of my cooking on that tiny island. I don't know why, but every time I get done cooking, I look around and laugh because I have all this extra counter space on the sides and I jam everything onto the island and cook. It's small, but still completely usable. I love it. Obviously, I'm never in the middle of cooking and wish I had more space, because I never use my extra space. And even with it being so small, I can still store all of my appliances underneath.
ETA: The kiddo woke up and I must have left out the last part.
My point is, even if you choose the angled sink, don't scrap the island because it's small. It will still be useful!
ITA-I think a bigger island will be more useable when entertaining and for cooking.
And that is what I am doing! I spent the entire freaking day dealing with this one thing. I think I am going to be much happier with this option. It actually doesn't allow for any more bar stools but it will make me much happier in the end.
I know its hard to picture but it all makes sense now, in my mind after all of the conversations today.
