Need a little help - buying a bike for dd

We are getting dd a bike for her birthday (she'll be 4)  She is about 40 inches tall so we were looking at a 16 inch bike. I really didn't think we would have such a hard time finding a bike. I don't want it to be princess and when I find a cute one it either only comes in 12 inches or it has a hand brake. I was shocked to find hand brakes on little kid bikes. I just had visions of her squeezing the brake and flying over the top. So, what kind of bike does your child have or had at that age? Does it have a hand brake?

Re: Need a little help - buying a bike for dd

  • Have you tried going to an actual bike store and not Toy r Us/Target/Wal-Mart? My mom always got our bikes at Scholl's in either Warrendale or West View. They were always super helpful making sure that she bought the appropriate size and type of bike for our age.
  • Our DD got a 16 inch bike for Christmas.  It doesn't have hand brakes and it isn't overly princessy or anything cause we are hoping she outgrows that phase before the bike!

Santa got it at the TRU store in Cranberry in December. It's a Huffy and has some pink trim and various colors of pastel polka dots. I think it was about $75.

    Good luck!

  • Noah's does have a hand brake, but it has regular brakes, too.  We just taught him to use the foot brakes, and not to use that one.  But honestly, he usually uses the "Fred Flintstone style" footbreak and drags his foot to stop.  :P
  • I will have to look at ours to see what kind it is. Dd's is purple and doesn't have anything princessy and I handlebar brakes. My dad actually won it at a raffle a couple years ago so I don't have advice on where to get it but ill look to see what brand it is and if its still available. It seems good for dd. she couldn't reach the pedals when they first gave it to her but that was I think for her 3rd bday. But last summer when she was 4 she could reach and ride.

  • We went with a balance bike for Jude.  It's definitely growing with him.  It does have a hand brake but he is just now getting to have hands big enough to use it!  And his instinct is to put his feet down instead of use it anyway.  but they do make balance bikes without brakes.  And they are usually bright, solid colors.  I found this site helpful when I was looking into them.

  • Dd's is a Huffy. This seems to be the closest I can find right now

I think DD's is cuter because hers is more plain and mainly just purple. Hers has "too sweet" and this one is "so sweet" so I think this is just a newer model. Dd's was probably bought at least 3 years ago
