Property taxes

We are looking to move and there seems to be a pretty big difference in taxes depending on the county. The wierd thing is that the nicer area has lower taxes but the homes are a little more. There are still areas that are good and you get a nicer home for the money, but the taxes are a lot more. It can be 4-5k more a year from what I can gather. Does it make more sense then to buy a more expensive home with lower taxes or should we just go for the house we like best?  We are hoping to get a great house for reasonable price with low taxes!  But it doesn't seem to happen unless they are by a train or something like that!  Frustrating!

Re: Property taxes

  • My advice would be to buy the home you want. Taxes can be rolled into your escrow account with your mortgage holder, and they are tax deductible on your Federal income tax filings.

The taxes are generally based on the value of the home, and the amenities that come with living in a certain area. For example, larger cities tend to have higher taxes because of the large geographic area and school system they are supporting.........smaller suburbs have higher priced homes because it's more desirable to live there, (supply & demand, and generally newer homes), but they are supporting fewer roads, smaller area.

    Good luck.

  • Pick the home with the best location that you like the most that has good resale possibility.

And FYI: Property taxes may be lower in the more expensive areas due to the business base of the town in which the homes are located. Lots of towns with solid business bases can provide lower home property taxes because the home taxes are so off-set by the taxes paid by the business infrastructure.

  • Get a house you like and can afford.  Taxes can increase so don't blow your budget on an expensive house and then be house poor when/if taxes increase.
