Hi everyone. I had a very interesting conversation with my mother-in-law (MIL) today about owing state and federal taxes. She recommended that I take an extra $20 out for state and federal taxes. She said that it won't be as hard come tax season when I have to pay them. Can anyone explain this to me? I used Google to try and find out more info but came up empty handed. Also, do I have to change my last name on my tax return to my married name in order to file it? Thanks for your feedback. It's greatly appreciated.

Re: Taxes
If you owe taxes each year, you can choose to have additional money taken out each paycheck. You can do this by decreasing the number of your allowances or having an additional amount taken out each paycheck. You just need to complete a new W-4 form. Some people choose to have more money withheld from their paychecks for taxes, so they know that they won't end up having to mail in a check at tax time. It is best financially to come close to breaking even each year (either getting a small refund or owing a small amount). You can also choose to save money on your own, so that you'll have enough to cover the taxes that you owe. You will want to make sure that you don't end up owing too much though ($1000+, I think) because you'll end up paying a penalty.
You should use whatever your legal last name is (whatever is on your social security card).
