Saint Patrick's Day Parade
I've always wanted to go to watch the parade but never have. I just always figure it would be too much of a pain in the butt with parking/traffic/crowds/etc. Does anyone here go? Is it worth it? Any advice on going? What time would we have to get down there, etc.? TIA!

Re: Saint Patrick's Day Parade
We are thinking of going for the first time this year too, so I don't have any helpful tips.
Our plan right now is to get there around 9am - I have no clue if that's enough time to get a decent spot, but I don't know how the boys will do if we get there any earlier. I figure worst case scenario we can just walk around and explore. I have parking at my employer's garage that is right near the parade route, so we were planning to park there. I'm going in with low expectations, and the fact that we're close enough to the city that it would be no big deal to turn around and go home at any point. I'm not sure if this is a good plan or how it will work out, but fingers crossed!
We go every year. I saw that the temps are supposed to be in mid- high 30s - a far cry from 70s last year! We usually get there around 10 but we come across 7th street bridge, make right onto william penn way & park in Oxford or garage on Boulevard. My inlaws side gets down there ridiculously early and tailgates in the garage on the Boulevard so we don't have to race to get a spot.
It does get crowded along the street early. Problem is it starts in the strip by the bus terminal so depending on where you are you could be waiting awhile for the parade to get to you. It usually doesn't hit the boulevard until 30 mins+ in . Bring blankets, chairs, snacks, drinks etc... and get a spot close to a port a potty or somewhere to go to the bathroom! The kids love it so I'm sure you will have a great time & you can always duck in somwhere and get lunch.
Check the website for more details http://www.pittsburghirish.org/parade/parade1/parade1.htm usually they list the order of people so you get a sense when the dancers will be coming vs all the loud firetrucks and the radio stations.
ETA - coming into town the way we do (from north and through north shore across bridge and up) we never have problems parking or with traffic.
