Hello all!
Currently I work as a nurse at a large hospital in Iowa. There have been some recent changes and as always things that very much frustrate staff. The unit that I am currently in has had horrible turnover. Everyone (including me) that works the night shift has been there less than 1.5 years. Even the day shift has had some tunover. I like where I work and for the most part the people I work with, however, there is another hospital owned by a different company.
This other hospital is "for profit" as where my current hospital "not for profit." With that being said they pay better, give out bonuses at the end of the year, and I'm not 100% sure but I would suspect insurance is better.
* for the record I work OB and have decided I would likely use one of their physician groups (when TTC) instead of what is offered at my hospital.
I realize the grass isn't always greener on the other side, however, I kind of want to get my foot in the door if things go south with my current job. They have 4 jobs posted on their website. At least one full time and one part time. I already work full time hours and probably wouldn't have a flexible enough schedule to pull off both and would need for it to be a PRN job. I do a lot of activities in the summer so I would not want to tack anything additional on until this coming fall (September).
I think it is wrong to go to the interview seeking for what hasn't currently been offered (PRN or even time frame). But I want to get in touch with the manager and explain I'm interested. Should I just wait till next fall and hope their is an opening? *Also- I have checked on this place before and this unit doesn't have a lot of job positions open very often.
Thanks!
Re: Additionl Job-what's your opinion?
If the positions are open now, and they are for a desirable hospital, with probably better pay, TTC options, and other benefits, you should go for it now and not wait.
And, why not try to get a FT position there since it seems like this is what you want ultimately anyway? And thus skip the two jobs thing.
Also, I understand you have summer activites, but what are your priorities - fun over three months in one year or a better long-term job/career situation for you and your family? Plan accordingly.
TTC since June 2012
I agree with everything that's been said. While a career move can be scary, it's only scary if you let it be. It sounds as though this other hospital has better options for you.
An interview is 2 sided anyway: you send in your resume, they decide whether to make an offer to you, then YOU decide whether to accept. If this is not what you want after they make their offer, you can always say no, with the explanation that it's not what you want NOW due to X, Y or Z reasons. You can always tell them you appreciated their time, but at this time you have some other reasons for declining, but would love to be considered in the future.
Nurses are so much in need I doubt that they will never have another opening. The other thing you mentioned though, that jobs don't open often tells me that people that get hired there stay, and there have to be very good reasons to stay. Probably a better place to work.
My career advice for what it's worth: don't limit yourself beforehand with a bunch of reasons why NOT to even apply for a job. Do it, then think it through later when you have hard facts and perhaps an offer.
Thank you! I appreciate everyone's comments but Sue- yours was the sweetest and most well said! Thanks everyone!
