RI water births

Does anyone know if they allow water births at the abc at women and infants in RI? Has anyone actually had one ? What birth center did you go to?

Re: RI water births

  • I believe they do. My friend labored in the tub at the ABC before things shifted and her plan was tossed out the window. But I do believe she would have had a water birth if things hadn't changed. Granted, this was 3 years ago, and things may have changed .

  • I found this blog post about a water birth at Newport Hospital. Further research is showing that Newport Hospital may be tge only one in state to actually do water births in a hospital, rather than using a midwife for a home birth. -- http://blog.bellanimaternity.com/index.php/2010/09/28/birth-story-tuesday-a-peaceful-water-birth/

They do not. The only place that allows water births is Newport Hospital, and I've heard that they allow it on paper but the care providers don't actually follow through and let you do it.

Memorial and the ABC each have only 1 labor tub and are first come first served, but you can bring your own labor tub to Memorial if you want. I believe Newport has a few. The rest of the hospitals only have showers. The only women I've known that had water births were home births, all with midwife Mary Mumford-Haley.

I don't know of any freestanding birth centers, and the only hospital-associated one I know of is the ABC.

I had 2 wonderful natural births at Kent, and if you're looking for care providers I can recommend an OB and midwife. And an OB group to stay away from.

There are quite a few ladies from RI that frequent the Natural Birth board on The Bump. Here's the thread from January about water births in RI:
