Re: CAR INSURANCE, NEED HELP!

  • Pls help i need it by this week.
  • Well, the auto insurance policy will go in one person's name with the other person listed as an additional driver (most likely). However, I'm not sure about insurance company's policies about adding additiontal drivers who are not spouses, children or other relatives either by blood or marriage. I don't know if they permit BFs. You will need to find this out.

Also, if you package insurances you can typically get better deals. For example if you wrap an auto and a rental policy together, it can save you.

When you call the companies you will need to know all the information of the car, plus your driving information like drivers' license data, and you will need to have an idea of approximately how many miles you will drive it per year. This isn't too tough to figure out, just Mapquest the distances of your most frequent destinations round-trip and add some mileage on for extra travel.

Companies to explore are Progressive, Geico, Allstate, and possibly Farmer's.

If you or the BF are military (any branch) or have family members who are active, retired, honorable discharged, reserve, etc. you can try for USAA (it's only for military peope) but their rates are typically lower.

  • I was on American Family for years and the prices got to high I switched to state farm.  Right now we pay around $280 every 6 months for my car and $320 every 6 months for DH's car.  We will always plan on switching up insurance companies every few years because every year it always goes up.

  • We have geico and I love it. For both of our cars, we're paying what DH was paying for just his car through state farm.

  • I have geico.. if you have General in your area - go for it.. its much cheaper.
  • I just switched mine a couple of weeks ago. I had Allstate but went to State Farm. They gave us the lowest deal. My DF switched from USAA, those premiums were OUT of control.
  • Google an "Independent Insurance Agent" in your area, and give them a call. They can quote you with multiple companies, and they will know what coverages you need as apposed to going online and guessing at what you need.

Also keep in mind that a Charger is a higher rated vehicle as it is considered a higher performance vehicle.  So the premium for a 19 year old driving a high performance vehicle, will not be cheap. Then if you have any tickets or accidents, or no prior auto insurance, it will be even more. All of those things play a factor into the price.

You will also want to add your boyfriend as a driver on the policy since he will be driving it just as much as you. You can be the "named insured" on the policy, and he can be an additional driver.

That's interesting. I have never heard of that happening before with USAA. It might also have something to do with the fact that we have all our insurance there and the older ages of our cars. We pay $306 every 6 months for two vehicles, including roadside assistance, and a personal article floater insurance on some jewelry.

We are 100% loyal to them due to their customer service also. Back a few years ago when we lived in Denver, that huge snowstorm hit and many people were stranded in their cars for days. The day after the storm, I had to go into work and I slid off the road into a ditch. Most people's auto insurance took them HOURS to come and have someone pull them out, USAA had someone to my aid in 20 minutes.

Another time, with kids in my car my engine began over heating on the highway - I had to pull off into a bad neighorhood for a tow truck and USAA had one their in 15 minutes.

Even if our rates went higher, we'd never leave. It's too great a company.

  • Auto insurance is a function of State law.  Nobody can give you good advice without knowing where you live & the auto insurance laws of that state.  We don't even know which carriers write business in the state where you are.  I could tell you how much I love my auto insurance company but if they aren't llicensed to do business in your state, what difference does it make?

The only way to figure out if you are getting a good deal is to comparison shop.  Call up a bunch of different carriers & get quotes. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples though:  same deductibles, same amounts of bodily injury coverage, same amounts of uninsured motorist coverage, same medical coverages etc.  If your state differentiates between the serious nature of an accident & your ability to sue -- often called a limitation on law suit or threshold -- make sure you get somebody to explain to you what that means & guide you toward the best coverage.

Me neither. I <3 USAA and have NEVER heard of anyone undercutting their price.
  • My first auto insurance was through Progressive. I went through a brokerage and they found me the lowest price. That was my only factor. Now I'm with State Farm. The price was about the same but the benefit is I have an agent. Whenever I have a question or something happens it's nice to call someone who knows you by name.

I also have home insurance with State Farm. It was really nice when we got robbed. I was able to call someone who actually cared and it got handled. I've also had to have my car towed. It was nice to call my agent so he could tell me what tow company to call.

Just wanted to share my experience with State Farm.

How did you take possession of the car without proof of insurance?  I've had good experiences with Geico and Progressive.  It's pretty easy to get quotes from difference insurers online and just go with the best coverage for the best price.
  • Esurance.  I have them and like them.  They are also now backed by allstate.

  • USAA is a good company but I knew someone that once they got a DUI they ended up finding car insurance through another copany for a much cheaper rate.

My advise is to find yourself a local insurance agent since you are not familiar with process. If you have a loan on the vehicle you will have to have full coverage (Comprehensive & Collision Coverage)

Comprehensive covers any claims due to fire, theft, vandalism & acts of nature.

Collision covers any damage done to the vehicle that is your own fault

You are only required to carry state minimum coverage, but if you can afford more, get it. I live in Ohio and the minimum cover is $12,500  per person & $25,000 total per accident in Bodily Injury (covers any injuries you cause to someone else in an accident) and $7,500 in property damage (covers any damage you cause to another vehicle or property). To be honest that isn't much of anything in coverage.

You never plan for an accident but what if you end up hitting someone in a brand new Mercedes, BMW or heck depending on the model, even a new Ford or Chevy. You want to make sure you have enough coverage to avoid being sued for what your insurance doesn't cover.

One way you may be able to save money on your car insurance (and protect your belongs too) is check into renter's insurance. If you get it through the same company, you can usually get a better rate on both. You may not have a lot and what you have may not be worth a lot, but you want to protect what you do own.

Also in some states insurance companies will give discounts if you have taken a defensive driver course. That may be something to ask about too.

Rates vary so much from company to company based on different factors such as location, driver age, vehicle type, what limits you want, it's hard to say who will give you the best rate. You're only option is to shop around.

  • Definitely comparison shop.  Call an independent agent, who can quote you many different companies, and also call GEICO, Allstate, State Farm, USAA (if you're military), and anyone else you can think of.  When you're getting quotes, make sure you are getting quotes based on the same amount of coverage.  That way you are comparing apples to apples.  It is nice to have an agent in your town if something should happen and you need to speak with someone.

Agents and companies usually aren't allowed to change the prices for their policies.  Keep this in mind - they can't just give you a lower rate because they want to be nice to you.  If you get renters/homeowners insurance along with your car insurance, you may be able to get a discount that way.  Again, if you're getting a discount quoted to you from one company, make sure you ask the other companies about discounts too so that you can compare apples to apples.

    Good luck!
