Pregnancy at Work

When did you reveal to your boss(es) that you were pregnant?  I didn't have this issue last time because I was a Nanny... I just told her right away because I couldn't do certain things with her child anymore.  Now I'm in a more professional environment and to boot, another woman in my department is expecting at the end of June. I figured I would tell them at the beginning of April (after Easter) because I would be 13 weeks and out of my first trimester.  Also, I don't have morning sickness this time around (thank god, that was NOT fun for 18 weeks).  TIA!

Re: Pregnancy at Work

  • When I was PG with DS my boss was a douche and had picked up on our fertility issues bc of all the "appts" I was having and flat out asked me when I was 6 weeks along. Then fired me a few months later. If I had my way, I would have wanted to wait until 12 weeks but I was showing so much by then I probably wouldnt have gotten away with it anyway.

Wow... that's ballsy of them.  How did they get away with firing you?  That just seems horrible.  I've been trying to hide my little belly which is why I am so paranoid about my weight gain.

I just never fought it. It would have costed us more money then it was worth. He was a slimy attorney who would have had free representation or be self represented and I would have went bankrupt trying. So instead I just collected unemployment for 2+ years. He tried to fight that too but I won.

But you're far enough along now that if they suspect anything, you arent too far off from telling them anyway.

  • I interviewed for my current position when I was 7 weeks pregnant. I ethically couldn't deceive them at the interview and not tell them. I told my boss on the interview that I was expecting and he said that it would never change anything and that he wishes me congratulations. There is also a girl in the office that is due in July (I didn't know this at the time of my interview) I shared with the rest of the office around 13 weeks, but wanted to be upfront from the beginning with management.

  • i told my boss around 10 weeks... dh and i were both getting laid off at the time and we felt that we needed to let her know before the big budget meeting. i think it saved my husband's job. we told co-workers at 12 weeks. even though some suspected it because i stopped drinking coffee every morning. i cant say for sure what i would do with #2 maybe at around 12 weeks.

I think I was four months.  I know that I was out of the first trimester and wanted to say something because i had started to show.  Some people suspected at our Christmas party (close work friends) because i didn't drink.  I said I was sick and was drinking ginger ale and cranberry so to others, it looked like a drink.

Work was really good.  I commute to NYC and so my doctor said no more of that with a month to go...which I was happy about b/c i was having fears i'd give birth on Metro North or something!  I ended up working from home the month before...and thank goodness because the first day i did, it was 105 degrees out and there was no way I could have handled that!!!

  • I was nearly 20 weeks...lol. I was waiting for my contract to be renewed, but felt like I couldn't not tell them before they renewed. Everyone here was super great and supportive.

  • I think anytime in the beginning half of the second tri is acceptable.  Just give them enough time to make plans for when your gone or get a replacement if youre not returning (not sure I'd tell them if I wasn't retuning til closer though).

  • It is still top secret at work. I am going to wait until 12 weeks.Funny, one of the medical assistants is way out in the open and is due 2 days after me.  I'm a little nervous because even though I work in healthcare and for a big group, the vibes I get are not mother friendly. It's a shame that my OB has strict office hours, no evenings or weekends. I already had to ask to leave at 4pm one day next week and think I will have to call out sick for my big 12 week appt.
  • 12 weeks just like everyone else. There was no reason for anyone to know any earlier than that.

  • I think a lot of determines on the type of position. I had to tell my bosses the instant i POAS because my job is very full of things that are bad with pregnancy (bone cement, x-ray, working 12-18 hours a day, combative patients, etc). I would have rather waited.
