Hey all,
My husband and I just got married 1/1/13, and I'm moving down to FSH to be with him while he finishes up some training. Does anyone have any helpful tips about FSH or the San Antonio area? I'm moving all the way from Pennsylvania, so this will be a whole new experience for me!
Thanks!
Re: Fort Sam Houston
Ironically, my new husband and I are PCSing at the end of the month from FSH.
Tips... If possible, live in North East San Antonio (Live Oak, Selma, Schertz, Universal City, ect.) Area. A lot of military people live in this area. It is safe and close to the Forum (shopping area). It is about 10-15 minutes from FSH and close to Randolph AFB, which has a great gym. You need to check out Rudy's BBQ off of I-35. It is delicious! It helps to learn the major highways. Once you learn that, it is much easier to get around. Inner Loop- 410, Outer Loop 1604. Other major highways- 35, 281, 10. My husband advises, as a local, that you stay away from the South Side. It is a more dangerous part of town. The North Star Mall and La Cantera (an outdoor mall) are fun places to shop.
I know lots of Pennsylvania people down here and they acclimated just fine.
Hopefully, you will be here in the summer so you can go tubing on the Guadalupe River and kayaking on Canyon Lake. There is a military recreational area by Canyon Lake that has lots of cheap rentals on various water recreational equipment.
Military and dependents get in to Sea World free once a year. It is so worth it!
I hope this helps! You will do great!
I live in San Antonio - if you have any questions or need anything, feel free to email me! (blueeyedaggie @ hotmail) I'm no longer a military spouse, but I hopped on the board to send a friend over here and saw your post.
I live over near Fiesta TX/ La Cantera/ The Rim - I love this area, but the NE areas mentioned are good too and there's lots of military over there because of Randolph AFB. I lived in Universal City for a bit in 2007-2008. There are some areas over there that I'd stay away from, but I don't think you really need to worry about that area in general (like the southside).
Megan is very right about the highways and learning the major ones she listed. XH was feeling so confused about them until I drew him a "map"....basically I zoomed out just enough on google maps to see all of SA/ loop 1604, printed it and drew out 1604/ 410/ I10/ 35/ 281 in black marker so he could really see how they ran across the city.
I could probably write you a novel, so I'll stop here, but please do email me if you want more info or anything! I'm happy to help, I just am not likely to see a response on here.
We actually ended up in Castle Hills, so not a bad area at all, but not a lot of military families.
We'll definitely have to try Rudy's, and we will be here in the summer, so tubing and kayaking sound like lots of fun!
Thanks for all of the helpful advice!
Good luck with your move!
I'm at Ft. Sam too...and from PA! It's a different world for sure, but a great city to live. We were lucky enough to end up on post, but there are some great neighborhoods off post as well. We actually had started with looking off post as we weren't expecting onpost housing, and were working with Housing 1 Source. They were a great resource and worked with us on every step of moving. They even have realtors who will work with you, show houses, etc. regardless of whether you are looking to buy or rent. They offer other relocation services in regard to employment, education, cable services, etc. They have a Facebook page as well if you want to check them out.
We just got here a bit ago and I will say that it seems to be a base filled with trainees and retirees in some aspects. Without having tons of brigades on hand, it's been a different experience for us and I will say it seems a little harder to get connected with others here. Starting early will help!
