3 year old is out of control

what do you do when your child just doesn't listen to you???? this is seriously putting a strain on my DH's and my relationship and creating a lot of yelling in our home.

yesterday we went to the mall. our son was so out of control running around, not staying with us, not listening to us.  we would threaten him that we would leave if he didn't stop. after a while he would be good and then soon after revert.  i even took him over to the easter bunny and told him about the bad behaviors.  my son said 'i'll try real hard to be good' and as soon as we walked away he started up again with the bad behaviors.  i reminded him the easter bunny is watching.... he's not scared of us, the easter bunny, threats, etc..... what gives? what can we do?

i ask him to pick up his toys.  after hours of asking, threatening, etc. i can finally get him to do it.  its ridiculous!  i know others have complained about age 3....and i feel like this is somewhat normal....but really? seriously????

Re: 3 year old is out of control

  • he is testing you. it is normal. But sometimes you have to move from the threat and onto the punishment even if it inconveniences you.  Give a warning... If you don't stop this behavior we are leaving. Then if it reoccurs, leave. Throw away a toy tha

  • Ditto the follow through!  Hours of threatening will never work, and will only result in a frustrated child and parent.  You told him that you would leave if he didn't stop - he didn't stop, but you stayed.   If you are not prepared to l

  • I agree.  Following through is key.  I am not afraid to give a time out in a public place, although most of our bad behavior happens in the house.

  • Another ditto on the follow through. We did a lot of counting, like if you don't stop doing x by the count of 3 then we will leave (or whatever consequence). Then count and if you get to 3 you gotta follow through.

however I will say that 3 is te

  • thanks for the advice and the reminder that i need to keep my follow through tighter. we do follow through but we do give more chances than he really should have.  our threats need to be more immediate and cut and dry.
  • Part of the reason that 3 is so hard is the lack of impulse control. Even if he knows and understands all of the rules, he doesn't have the impulse control to follow the rules all of the time. That's why he can have days with great behavior and then dr

  • Ditto the others -- 3 is hard, and following through is key. My H is famous for making threats he can't possibly follow through on (like "if you don't stop it you're never going to watch TV again")!
