Obligatory Pope Post

Pope Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio from Buenos Aires. 76, I think?

Way to think outside Europe, conclave!

Thoughts, anyone?

Re: Obligatory Pope Post

  • I'm glad they picked someone from South America.  I'm not crazy about his age - I thought they were going to go with someone a little younger but I hope he addresses the many challenges facing the church.

  • I don't know enough to have a valid opinion...yet.
  • I will say that his choice of name is refreshing - He will be the first Pope to use the name Francis, which symbolizes humility, simplicity and rebuilding.

  • He is very, very conservative on social issues...I would like to see the church evolve in this area, won't happen though. They will continue to lose members over time. No contraception, come on already...
  • So he's pretty much the status quo with a Spanish accent.

  • Perhaps. On the other hand, he may have "helped" gay rights in Argentina:

"His militancy in the campaign against Argentina's "Equal Marriage Law" in 2010 was so tone-deaf that <a href="http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1285258-la-Carta-de-be

  • Pope Francis is a Jesuit.  I know most of you are not Catholics, so that may not mean much.  But I went to a Jesuit University and they are by no means ultra conservative. Think Loyola and Xavier.  They are really big on social justice.<

  • I'm glad he's a Jesuit too.  Many people thought we'd never see a Jesuit Pope.

  • Nice choice as a nod to Latin America, but I wonder if they picked a pope who was 76 so that they could go back to a European pope once this one dies.
