what to bring on beach vaca with infant? and other random questions

I need to hear from voices of experience!  We are flying to Maui (yay!) when DD is 10 months.

Should we bother bringing a beach tent?  I thin it would be great o have to keep DD out of the sun and more comfortable.  But I don't want to be that lone family on the beach with one.

Should we bother lugging our heavy Bob stroller?  Other stroller option is our super lightweight travel stroller.

Another option is a carrier: we have a framed backpack style that does have nice compartments to hold things or we have an ergo which of course takes up much less room but doesn't have much in the way of compartments.

I'm sure we'll take one stroller and one carrier - the question is which ones?  I hope to do a lot of walking in whcih case Bob is better.  But man than thing is a bear to travel with.  Which is why I'm leaning towards bringing our framed backpack carrier.

Should we lug our travel crib (28 pounds so would be an extra  item to check, I assume)?  Or just rent one there?  I don't think the condo provides free ones.

Oh, and we have the car seat to take too!  I don't want to rent one - I've heard too many horror stories!  So as a previous minimalist back packer, I really want to think this through and NOT bring items that we won't be very happy we bothered to bring!

  • We tend to travel pretty light. Personally, I would rent most gear once we arrived in Maui. Most vacation areas have baby gear rental places that will deliver right to your hotel. You could probably rent a BOB and a pack-n-play. I bring my own pack-n-play

  • We liked our tent when our son was an infant.  he was darker and cooler in there and he slept well there.  Also, I like hiding our stuff inside it.
