Gray Paint - Suggestions needed

We are trying to find a gray paint that doesn't look blue. We have paint sample spots ALL OVER our house, but they all look blue except the ones in the kitchen! We even got the brown toned gray. I wouldn't mind even a tan that would work well with gray - our kitchen cabinets are dark gray (lower) and white (upper). Our kitchen looks like the one in this house: http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/303-W-Gramercy-Pl-San-Antonio-TX-78212/26142016_zpid/#hdp-photo-lightbox

The colors we've tried are:

Benjamin Moore: Revere Pewter

Benjamin Moore: Gray Owl

Benjamin Moore: Ozark Shadows

Glidden/Martha Stewart: Nimbus Cloud

Behr: Ground Fog

At night they don't look bad, bur during the day they look really blue.

Also, would it be too much to use a light gray as the main color in our house? We have an open living room/kitchen, stairs that sort of wrap (there is a landing) and would also paint the upstairs hallway. Our walls are currently "toasted almond" (light tan). Our curtains are dark gray, couch is gray, etc. I'm open to suggestions!

Re: Gray Paint - Suggestions needed

  • I painted my bedroom grey last year. We went with a color called "simply grey". We bought it as Lowes but I can't remember what brand it is. We went with grey and yellow. The room is bright and calm. I'm glad we went with it.

  • we had the same issue. put about 12 samples on the wall and they all looked awful even though i loved the swatches. then i chose the least offensive one and painted a large section (underneath the bar in my kitchen) and loved it! so my suggestion is to paint a bigger section. if you hate it, paint another with a different one. you're going to have to do 2 coats regardless and if you already have the sample size then why not?

fyi: we tried all of those grays, too, and ended up with BM stonington gray. :) hope that helps!

  • We did stonington gray too in our bedroom and I don't think it looks blue.

  • I just used Behr Silver Drop.  It's the exact same shade as the drywall was before I primed it.  Ha!  Apparently I liked the way it looked when it was unfinished.  But it's not blue or purple, so that's good.

If I had it to do over again, I'd use the next shade darker on the card- Dolphin Fin.

I can't remember the exact color, I'll try to find it but it was more of a greige and it didn't have a blue tone to it.  It was from Sherwin williams but it was in the gray/beige family but it looks more gray on our walls.  You might try for something like that?

  • We used a lot of grays in our new house. My favorites are Windsor Greige (SW) and Heavy Goose (Martha Stewart).

(We also used Nimbus Cloud, but it came out a bit gloomier than I expected.)

  • We used Behr's "Granite Gray" in our living room/dining room. It looked blue going onto the wall...but it dried gray. Since your accents are gray as well...it might be nice to do a different colour tho so it doesn't all blend together. Blue or Brown?
