In-law issues

So I've known for a long time that my in-laws are crazy, but they took it to an all new level this past weekend.

We recently adopted a second dog and brought both dogs to the in-laws "cabin" aka their palace this past weekend. Kirby, our new puppy was forced to stay in his kennel while the other family dogs were free. I understood this from the beginning because I knew my FIL lives his stuff absolutely pristine. This bothered me me but I let it go. My MIL had told both my hubby and I that we could keep Kirby in the inside kennel as opposed to the outdoors one, which was her compromise with my FIL. It was below zero this weekend so I was grateful for that.

Last night, my FIL called my hubby and yelled at him for 2 hours about letting Kirby stay inside ( in his kennel where he could destroy nothing, remember). He told my hubby that Kirby was not welcome at the cabin at all and those had been the rules all along. He is a very cold, unloving man ( words from my hubby). He also has put a " 1 dog per family" limit on every family.

this might not seem like a big deal, but this was the last straw for me. Years of putting up with similar incidents has finally worn me down. I am lucky enough to have my hubby on my side I guess.  I'm afraid to let our future children in their cabin or around the in-laws in general.

Am I overreacting?

Re: In-law issues

  • As a dog lover and owner, I too find this ridiculous and it would have me reeling.  In fact, I would refuse to stay anywhere that meant my dog would be locked up for days, whether it's indoors or not.  However it is their home and they can insis
  • Thanks for your input! We have decided that day trips up there are in the future because we don't want to separate the dogs quite yet as our newly adopted dog has separation issues from his sister.
  • His house, his rules.   I don't think you're overreacting, but I also feel like you and your DH haven't quite REALLY accepted what your FIL is like.  My advice from here on out is to start working w/ who he is - not who you want him to b

  • I agree with PP's. While I do think hes being ridiculous it's his house his rules.

Why on earth would your husband allow himself to be yelled at for 2 hours. I would hang up after 2 minutes of that crap. Simply say fine, then we won't be re

  • It is his house, so I'm inclined to say you're overreacting about the dog being in the kennel.  I have a dog, as do my parents and my sister/BIL.  My parents dog is not welcome in our house because she's a little trouble maker and gets my dog

  • So let me get this straight.

You knowingly took your dog to a house where it would have to stay in a crate for the entire visit and this is somehow your FIL's fault?

Sure he is an for his views on one animal per house.  Sure h

  • I honestly think it is quite nuts to expect an animal to be caged outside in below 0 weather, unless they specifically bred/come from that type of area! Yes, it is his house, so he can decide if one of the dogs needs to be kenneled- though I would be u
