Coming off BC...

I went for my yearly check-up at the lady doctor (DH prefers I call her that :) ha!) and told her that DH and I were talking about TTC. She recommended that I finish out this pack of BC (two weeks) and then use condoms for the next two months.

I've never actually heard that you need two months to come off BC. She said it's for "timing" purposes - that giving my body two months to regulate will make it easier for me to time when I'm fertile and help them time the date of conception if/when I do get pregnant. She then proceeded to say "I mean, if you were to get pregnant in those two months, it won't harm the baby or anything - it's just for timing purposes"

We haven't used condoms for the last 8 years... and we really don't want to do that now. Does anyone know of any reasons why we can't just wing it, knowing full well that my cycles may be a little screwy those first two months?

Re: Coming off BC...

  • What the doctor makes sense but if you just want to have fun without protection go for it. Other then timing purposes it would give you two months of tracking/ charting/ temping your cycle to really know what's what after being on bc. I know there may be
  • She said it loud and clear! If you were to get pg during those two months it wouldn't hurt the baby, so I wouldn't use them. My BFF got pg the 1st month after she got off BC, and her son is healthy & happy. Plus, if you are going to be temping, etc. i
  • February 2012 when I told my doctor that DH and I were going to start trying later that year, she told me to not stop my BC until we were ready. She said you are just as fertile, if not more fertile, the first month you quit taking BC. I think it's all

    TTC since June 2012

  • I went off BC last July, my cycle was exact the first two months they went haywire for the 3 months after that and I still was able to conceive.  I say just go off when you're actually ready to get pg and then go for it.

  • There's no medical reason. Just know that it can and does happen (for some people) the first cycle off BC.
  • My doctor (who I love for his honesty) told me that the only reason why doctors say to wait a couple months is for their own purposes because it does help them track the conception date better. So he said anything goes and to just start whenever you want
  • Late to the game... but basically what everyone else said.

As soon as you stop taking the BC, it is basically out of your system, so no medical worries.  I stopped taking my BC in February last year and DH and I did nothing differently from
