Any political fashionistas?? Please help!

I posted this on Fashion and Beauty, but didn't get enough responses to satisfy me.  What do you think??

Let me explain first:  I have a very conservative event (bat mitzvah) where I've been instructed to wear a dress/skirt and not to let my tattoo show - conveniently located on my ankle.  That means I'm restricted to boots or tights.  With tights, I only have three shoe options available a) red heels (kind of a deep ruby red; not too bright); b) black slingback peeptoes with a little bit of white piping; or c) black and tan animal-ish print peeptoes. I know none of these options are great, but I'm quite literally out of time to get anything new, so please work with me here.

On the boot front, I have one pair - black almost to the knee with a SQUARE toe (they're a few seasons old andthe square toe seems a bit dated....?)

Social pressures - the event will be attended by all of DH's family, which is full of fashionistas - at least two of them can be described as fashionistas on steroids.  Also, I have a reading during the service, so I'll be in front of the congregation for a brief time, so no hiding in the crowd and hoping no one notices my shoe situation.

The main objective here is not to look like a complete jackass/walking faux pas.  Please help!!  What would you wear???

Lastly (thanks for reading all this) there is a VERY slight outside chance that I can do maybe an hour of very focused shopping.  I can't count on it, though, so must be prepared to go with what I have.  But on the off chance I can hit a shoe store, what would you suggest if the above shoes suck??

Thanks so much!  You have NO IDEA how much I need your guidence!!

  • What is your actual outfit?

My first thought is go with something relatively conservative -- maybe a charcoal suit or a black pencil skirt and cashmere sweater.  Wear patterned tights (which are *very* in right now and ought to please the fashionistas).  Put the deep red heels with it and call it a day.  Who can argue with sassy red shoes?

If they can, I say, screw 'em Wink

  • not sure about the rest of the outfit but Id wear the red shoes. I also own a pair of deep shiny red pumps (kinda a cranberry shade - sofft brand and I PPH them). I have worn them w/ brown tights, dark denim skirt and a brown sweater, and imo it works. I would go dressier than that for a bat mitzvah, but my shoes at least do work with a dark tight.

  • Actually, I'm not sure on the outfit.  I have a simple black dress, but DH thinks it's too plain.  He thinks I should go with a black skirt and top (sort of suit-ish without the jacket.)  Sadly, I don't own any skirt suits (since I have the tattoo, I tend to favor pants suits, which are out!)

  • They sell tattoo coverup thingies. ?Would that help?

Sadly, no - but only because I am literally out of time to go buy any.  I've used it in the past and it worked really well.  But I just found out about the no pants/no tattoo thing last night.  I've got my work holiday party right after work and we're flying out at 8 am tomorrow.

As a very last resort, I thought I could get an ace bandage and feign an ankle injury.  Dh thinks that's stupid!

  • what is the black dress like? a plain black dress can be punched up EASY... with jewelry and those fun red shoes (or the print peeps)

  • The dress is a black sweater dress, but it's lightweight.  It has 3/4 length sleeves and kind of a scoop/boat type neck line.  I also have one that is sort of like a wrap dress with a v-neck.  It's short sleeved with a little pucker at the shoulders, but nothing too big.

Also, the tights are textured, so at least I have that going for me!

  • If you could PIP the dress I can probably help you.  I'd avoid those square toe boots, but I'm anti tights/stockings with open toe shoes.

It would actually be great if you could PIP all the options, dress plus shoe choices.

My knee jerk reaction however is to tell you to run to Macys, DSW, Nordstrom or anywhere with an extensive shoe department and look for an updated pair of black boots.

I'll start looking online for you to give you ideas.

  • I already like the idea of the wrap dress more than the sweater dress (seems more formal) but  PIP would be ideal!
  • I'm looking.....here's what I've found so far:

Here are the exact animal-ish print ones - http://www.target.com/Mossimo-Danae-Peep-Toe-Pumps-Giraffe/dp/B000VXVKM8/qid=1228946462/ref=br_1_15/186-4686699-3206565?ie=UTF8&node=1060512&frombrowse=1&rh=&page=1

Here is something very similar to the black and white slingbacks I have, only the gold-ish piping on mine are white.

This is similar to my boots, only with a yucky square toe:

  • Those boots are great!  Go get those ones!  (I'm not a fan of the sling backs)

I also like the animal print pumps but the boots are FABULOUS.

  • The closest things I could find on the dresses:

image Only the sleeves are shorter

imageAgain, the sleeves are shorter (3/4 length) and the neck is slightly scoopy-er.

Sorry I don't have exact pics and sorry I can't make them bigger.  I'm leaving work in an hour so am trying to finish work and do fashion...

  • the top dress is way more my style than the bottom one.  I love v necks and I think wrap styles are generally more flattering.

DEFINITELY go with the dress  that looks like the top picture.  Do you have some cool accessories?

  • I'm thinking more conservative with the accessories - like maybe my pearls or the dainty little star of david?  It is temple services, after all!

  • Ok, let me get this straight - you think the wrap dress with boots, but only if I have time to get non-square toed ones?

Assume I can't get away to get new shoes, should I go with the square toes?  Or the tights with the red shoes?   Let me see if I can find a pic of the red ones real quick.....

Like these, only the heel is the same color as the shoe.  This color is really close to the ones I have.

  • As someone who has recently been to two OJ engagement parties, one of which was in a $$$$ town on Long Island, I totally relate to your predicament!

I'd go with the sweater dress, tights, and red pumps.  Dress it up with pearls or diamonds and a fun clutch.

    Have fun! :)

  • Oh boy, you are getting all different advice!

    =)

I do prefer the wrap dress but the red pumps would go much better with the second dress (they don't go with the wrap style and tights)

If you don't have time to shop at all, go with what Marquis said.  If you can get the boots, I'd go the other route.

either way, you'll be hawt so don't worry!

  • Go with opaque tights and one of the peep toe shoes. Opaque tights and open toes are NOT a faux pas right now. That's a very big look.

I'd say if you're with a bunch of fashionistas, wear the animal print ones. But if it's extremely conservative, that might be a bit much. I'd definitely go with a heel over a boot, though. I just love how tights and heels look!

Agreed.  No need to go out and buy things -- you're in great shape with the LBD, tights, and red heels!
