Finding lower airfares?

Hi ladies...just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on finding cheap(er) airfares?

Aside from the usual suspects (kayak, orbitz, etc)....

H & I are traveling to Barcelona early June to visit friends, hit up Sonar Festival, and get the rest of our belonging that we left behind when we moved back to US. Right now, the airfares we are coming across are obscene. I realize that summer is 'peak' travel time, but really - we are finding airfares that are like 1200$ and up. The good news though - we don't have to pay for a place to stay - we have several people offering us to crash in their place, which helps.

We're trying to see if there's any other way with the airfare though....has anyone ever dealt with a travel agent directly and if so, do you think they can offer better prices on airfare? I was looking into airline consolidators too but I know almost nothing about this option at all....but if anyone else here has and can recommend something, please let me know....we are looking to travel June 6th-17th.....

I have friends who found lower fares a few weeks ago, but we had to wait until we knew for sure if we could actually take the time off from work. Will just keep looking....

  • Set up a fare alert on your computer.

Also know who's not on the big travel websites & go to their websites.  I was "cyber stalking" the big sites but then got a much better deal on Southwest for our upcoming domestic tri

  • this may or not may be true, but I read on an article on usatoday.com that when you do go to finally book that you should delete your cookies on your computer b/c your browsing history would show you've been looking at airfare and charge a higher price

  • Strange, I know, but airfare changes day to day. It seems to be lower when you book on Thursday. Also, flying during the week can be significantly lower than flying Friday-Sunday.
  • When we were working with a travel agent on a trip to Italy, her airfares were the same as what I found on Kayak.
