DD is almost 4 and we have been working on writing her name. We practice at home and they do it with her at school. She doesn't really seem to be making any progress with it. The more I watch her the more I think the problem is the way she is holding the crayon/pencil. She holds it very funky and barely pushed on the paper. I know she is young (and has 8 letters in her name) but I just feel if she could master how to hold the writing utensil, forming the letters would be easier for her. So, my question is, how do you teach the correct way to hold a pencil? We do have those triangular crayons that are supposed to help with positioning.
My 2 year holds a crayon beautifullly. It's almost amazing.

Personally I wouldn't stress over it. I would encourage small motor skills through play and art but she will get better with it. I don't hold my pencils correctly, and I turned out ok. I also don't type correctly. Such a rebel.
<pAdam can and has wrote his name for a long time, he doesn't hold his right either. I would sometimes correct him but not always it didn't bother me a ton since he could do it, BUT he is in Preschool and it is something they marked on his progess
