Critique my party menu - please!

The kid turns 4 next week and we're having his first "kid" birthday party on Saturday.  Please cross your fingers that the weather clears by then because if we can't do an outdoor egg hunt with these young'uns, I don't know what we're doing with them!

The menu I have planned seems pretty simple to me but please tell me if this looks ok.  We'll have 7 kids and around 12 adults

Hot dogs (DH will grill, I don't care if it's cold outside)

Mac n cheese (homemade)

Veggie assortment (carrot sticks, grape tomatoes, bell peppers)

Fruit assortment

Cake

Do you think I need to have some other side dish for the adults?  A salad maybe?

And do I need to serve ice cream with the cake?  MIL won't be there, thank goodness, because she'd probably die if I didn't.  But I just don't want to deal with it...

Do you think I could do hot dogs in the oven somehow??

Re: Critique my party menu - please!

  • I will cross my fingers for nice weather for you!  I think your menu looks great; if you wanted to do a salad for adults you could, but they do have the veggie tray (and if they're like me, they'll be excited for the homemade mac & cheese, too

  • I think I just answered my own question about the oven hot dogs.  Maybe I'll do plain ones and some baked chili dogs like this.

  • What time is the party, how many kids and adults, how long?

i only ask because I felt like snacks we did at dd's party took up a lot of time and we didn't even do a full meal. We did a "tea party" with fruit and little finger foods for the kids a

  • Sounds like a good menu to me.  I might add in a tossed salad for adults or something like that.  As for cooking hot dogs in the oven....I do it all the time.  If I cant have grilled hot dogs then I like them baked.  Cooking them in

  • I think it looks fine.  With the veggie tray I don't think you need a salad.   I will hope for warm and sunny weather for you!

I never, ever serve ice cream with cake.  Probably because we never had ice cream with our cake when I w

  • The party is 11-1.  And besides food and the egg hunt...the only activity is playtime.  So I don't mind if food is a big part of it.

  • I think the menu looks great. I would probably forget the salad since you're doing a veggie tray.

I hope the weather is nice for you, but if it isn't, maybe you could do the egg hunt in your house, maybe only in 2 rooms (like living room, e

  • I think your menu looks good. I tend to like ice cream with cake, but I'd live if it wasn't served that way :) And as for hot dogs, if you're running low on space/time I believe you can cook them in the crockpot. I hope the weather is good for you!

I never serve cake and ice cream together. I hate ice cream and I feel like it never really gets eaten anyway. <

  • I think you're fine w/out ice cream. I may do fruit salad if you have littler ones coming (who can't eat hot dogs or raw veggies). I personally don't like hot dogs, but I'd be happy with mac n cheese and veggies. And it's over at 1, so if people don't see
  • Also, if these are school friends coming and their parents...I tend to not really eat at those kinds of parties.  The parents always say "hey have some pizza!" or whatever, and I do eat a little bit, but I feel funny eating at a party that's really f
  • I think it sounds great. Adding ice cream is just asking for a mess, IMO.

  • instead of another 'veggie salad'  maybe potato salad or coleslaw or something? or maybe baked beans (hobo beans or something- found them on pinterest. they look delicious)?

and maybe tons of toppings for hot dogs? like avocado, chili, chees
