Caden - we have a bond

I just got a lovely message from my University President:

the United Auto Workers Local 4123 representing the teaching associates, graduate assistants and undergraduate instructional student assistants has voted to strike on campuses starting Wednesday, December 10, 2008

This is the last day of instruction for the Fall Semester and Finals start Thursday - good time to do it.  The best part is they are going on strike because PAID Teachers Aids (students) do not get a full tuition waiver.

Got to love the UAW

Re: Caden - we have a bond

  • fun times.  The GA's went on strike at NYU under the UAW my senior year.

Didn't affect me really as I took mostly seminars, but my friends in language courses were screwed.

  • Fortunately this will not affect me, my department only uses Professors and Adjunct Faculty, all the TAs do for graduate classes is grading.

Thank you for not freaking me out.

What the frack does the UAW have to do with anything at SJSU?

Haha, at least people drive cars there.  Virtually all NYU kids travel by foot and train (subway).

The UAW just has its hand in everything ridiculous.

  • Teaching Assistants get paid and they expect full tutition reimbursement too? Hmm...
    Slainte!
    my read shelf:
Jenni (jenniloveselvis)'s book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Yea, TAs and postdocs have been talking about unionizing at Yale too.  It's a ridiculous idea.  And now, postdocs at Berkeley are UAW members.  Eee gads.

  • I should add that this is a Cal State School, we do Bachelors Degrees, Masters Degrees, Credentials and some Certificate programs.  Nobody gets paid by the school (stipend) to be a student.  All the TA positions are listed as student financial aid, and nobody is required to do them.

But of course they should get paid and have free tuition  Super Angry

  • Funny thing, the UAW represents some teaching graduate students! Crazy I know...

But crazier still, don't they realize that the state of CA has NO FREAKING MONEY?!! They are lucky to have paid positions. They need to keep dreaming if they think they are going to get free tuition on top of the already sweet deal. Hello, the UC/CSUs are now talking about cutting enrollment and raising tuition!! This union needs to wise up to the seriously BAD economic times CA currently finds itself in.

Well, the UAW as a whole doesn't seem to understand the concept of recession, so why should California be any different??
