Hotel recs for Newport, RI?

DH and I are looking into a weekend trip to Newport for our first wedding anniversary. We're a bit tight on budget these days, so would love to keep it around $150/night. Anyone have any recommendations?

I'd also love suggestions for restaurants and things to see and do!

Re: Hotel recs for Newport, RI?

  • We like the Viking. Depending on the time rates can be really good.
image Nicholas loved for 28 weeks, 4/11/10
Baby Boy loved for 15 weeks, 5/31/11
Baby Girl loved for 16.5 weeks. 3/1/12
  • What time of year?

If you are thinking summer and have a tight budget, I would say to stay at one of the BnB's in town.

Otherwise, you could stay at the Comfort Inn in Middletown, its actually not far at all, its walking distance to the Cliff walk, its right at the bottom of the hill from Bellevue. Its across from the Atlantic Beach Club and the beach too! It's fairly new and I know a lot of people love staying there but hurry--it books up SO fast!

Check around for dates, for example, the Newport Beer feestival, Chowder Fest, Jazz Fest etc are all expensive weekends to stay.

I would suggest doing cocktails or pre dinner drinks on the lawn as Castle Hill- so much fun, romantic and you don't have the price tag of eating there!

I also really like Sardella's if you like Italian.

If you want to splurge- Try 41North. The Grill and the bar on the pier are great. (prob $100-150 per couple depending on what you order), but you can always grab and app and a drink at the bar.

There is now a barking crab in Newport, right across fromt he Wharf. I haven't been to the Newport location, but the one is Boston was SO much fun

  • Thanks for the suggestions, Brina and Tiffany! We are looking at the end of June (our anniversary is June 30), and it looks like that is super peak expensive time in Newport. I checked out the Viking- very lovely, unfortunately out of budget for us.

Brina, typically I would shy away from places like a Comfort Inn for a special occasion, but the fact that that one is brand new and right across from the beach and the beach club makes me think it's worth checking into, thanks! And thank you for the restaurant suggestions, very helpful! :)

We got married in Newport last June so I know how you feel about finding a good rate. Your best bet is going to be to check out the inn's and b&b's. They won't give you a pool but they will give you a nice place to stay at a good price. The comfort inn across from the beach is decent, no great shakes though, and is not walking distance to the downtown. There are a LOT of smaller inn/b&b places right in the heart of the downtown though and we had a lot of guests stay at them.

Also, check out priceline, travelocity, etc. if you really want a chain hotel. We booked our hotel room for the wedding and found that we saved a few hundred $ by using their websites vs. directly booking (we did the viking). But, those sites will not pick up inn's/b&b's.
