We are starting to look into getting our first home in 12 months (March/April 2014 move in). I work in an industry where I go into a busy season from Oct-Feb and its hard to have free time to search with my husband. I could have a few weekends, but I don't know when you would need to finish closing.
So I was wondering how early would be too early to talk to an agent or start looking into homes. Any advice would be appreciated on when to start looking and whats the time difference between closing and moving in for most people.

I believe this could vary by state, but I think what you might mean is time difference between an offer being accepted and closing because at least where I live you move in/take possession the day you close. A lot has to do with your market so I

I don't think it is every "too early" to start researching your options and learn what you can afford in your area. I think starting a year early would really give you a leg up when it gets down to it. What I would do right away:
