Christmas songs

We have been listening to christmas music here at work the past couple days and it got me thinking about singing christmas songs in elementary school.  Did you guys have music class where you sang christmas songs the whole time?  Oh man...we did and it was so much fun.  What were some of the songs you sang? Those were the days....

My favorites were:

"grandma got run over by a reindeer"

"must be santa"

"I want a hippopotamus for christmas"

"I saw mommy kissing santa claus"

Re: Christmas songs

  • I don't know why, but I really prefer the classic, traditional Christmas songs the most, like Silent Night.

This morning I heard the donkey Christmas song for the first time this season and I had to laugh.

  • Yeah I like the traditional songs now too but as a kid those funny ones were so much fun to sing.
  • I'm with Stacey...I prefer the traditional carols and songs.  When I hear the donkey, hippo, grandma or other crazy song come on, I immediately turn the channel.  Knock on wood, I have yet to hear one note of Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer this year...and I hope it stays that way Smile

  • i remember singing all of those songs lesli!  i loved that.  i loved to sing rudolph the red nosed reindeer and in between the lines you would say something else..for example:

"had a very shiny nose" - "LIKE A LIGHTBULB!"  i loved that..

  • We had this one song we used to sing called "Marshmallow World" I used to walk around singing it all the time and my DH thought I was making the song up (which he should know I'm not that creative) but it was playing in a store yesterday and I freaked out - he finally heard someone else singing it!
  • I LOVE that "Marshmallow World" song!  It's on one of my many Christmas CD's and I love to sing along when it comes on.  My DH thinks its a ridiculous song though and makes no sense to him, lol.

I went to a Catholic grade school so we sang traditional Christmas hymns mostly.  O, Little Town of Bethlehem was always one of my favorites.

  • I went to Catholic School too, so most of what we sang in school were probably church songs.  Some of those songs are still get me in the Christmas Spirit better than most of what I hear on the radio.  The one song that really sticks out in my head is "Great Day in Bethlehem".  The 8th grade class sang that song every year in the Christmas pagent and all the younger classes couldn't wait until it was their turn to do that song :)

OMG, Lesli!  I totally remember those days with Mr. Shultz back at Hillside.  I had forgotten all about the "must be santa" song...Musicmust be santa, must be santa, must be santa, santa clause!Music  I have no idea how the rest of that song goes.  Not Christmas related, but do you remember "miss jenny jones" and that halloween song where Mr. Shultz would try to walk through the door every year?  PS.  I think that man was a bit off his rocker.  Pretty sure he was drinking a bit of alcohol with his tea bag!

  • I love thinking back to singing all of those songs in elementary school. Today our chorus gave their holiday concert during school and I loved it! One nice thing about being a teacher is you can still do these things : )

I also prefer the more traditional carols though. Stacey--I also heard the donkey song for the first time this morning--106.5? I listened to it, but doubt I'll hang on through another round!?

Ha, yes 106.5.  I held on for that time and then they played it again this afternoon.  I had to change the challenge.  Donkeys and Christmas don't mix.Stick out tongue

lol...I can't stand the donkey song.  The first time I heard it was a few years ago on a car ride.  I had fallen asleep in the back seat and woke up hearing that!  I started grumbling to my parents, "What the heck are you guys listening to?"  Needless to say I was not happy about it, and I couldn't believe that it was a christmas song.  Imagine waking up to, "HEE HAW, HEE HAW, HEE HAW!"
