I believe L is starting to show signs of self soothing. We try to put him down when he is still awake but ready to go to sleep. The last few nights, he has awakened about an hour after we put him down. This wasn't anything new for him, so we would usually go in and pat him back to sleep. However, he started making grunting/whining noises a few days ago, but he would only cry a few seconds between grunts. He did not get into a full blown cry at all.
My issue is that even though he didn't cry much, he didn't put himself back to sleep either. We let him lay in his crib a good 20 minutes (he was just looking around and grunting) before we went in to pat him.
Would you continue to go in after awhile or let him go if he is not crying?

I agree with PP, as long as he's not crying, let him go. A little fuss is fine. He is too young to CIO, though, so if he ramps up, I'd go in and help him soothe.
