Having trouble keeping track

I finished massage school last December and am now doing about 18 hours of massage a week, plus 28 hours doing nails (at a place I have worked for five years). The massage gig pays on the 15th and 30th of every month, plus I take home all of my tips in cash each day. The nail salon pays every other Wednesday, and tips that are paid in cash I get that same day, but any credit cards tips go into my paycheck. I am finding it really hard to keep track of money going in and out. I used up my savings and accrued some credit card debt while I was in school. The debt is down to about 2000, and I need to get it paid off and get some savings. On paper there should be more than enough money l, but I am completely disorganized and don't even know where to begin.

  • Are your paychecks hand-written by your employer(s) or are they direct deposited?

If you aren't using DD, but your employer offers it, then sign up. You have to open a checking account up at your bank first if you don't have o

  • I do have direct deposit for both jobs. I guess the problem lies more in that I have money trickling in all month long, in different amounts and from different sources. The amount I make from day to day can vary widely too. And now I am getting around 800
  • With $800 in cash (I'm guessing small bills) it's easy to spend.

What you could do is deposit your cash 2x per week, so it isn't burning a hole in your pocket. By using a debit card and the register, you can track via your bank statements/online

  • If you pay cash for things, keep all the receipts and add them up at the end of the month so you can see where that money went.  Also, you could deposit that cash into your checking account so you can track it better.  I keep all receipts in a r

  • Yeah, it's primarily small bills. Unfortunately it is logistically difficult to make deposits very often since I do not have a car and I get home really late, so I tend to just use any cash I have on hand first before using my debit card. It gets used

  • When I get cash tips at work, I save them all for a specific goal-- like right now it goes in a special clutch purse for "vacation/travel fund." And when my purse gets too full with small bills, I just go to the bank to get them exchanged for larger bills

  • As of right now I do not get enough in my direct deposits to pay for everything. I have to use some of the cash at least. I also won't keep large sums of cash in my apartment either. I did it once, it was stolen. I still have no idea who or when. Never

If you don't keep money in your apt or purse and you can't go to the bank very often.. what do you do with it? I hope you don't spend it all immediately.

I would try to put away half of your tips for savings, whether you deposit it or hide

  • If I don't use it within a day or two I give it to my DH to put toward my half of the expenses or I deposit it if I need to to pay bills. But that doesn't happen very often. Between groceries, bus passes ($95 a month), weekly massages, copays, gifts, meal
  • First, you really need a spreadsheet. Excel preferrable. If you don't have Excel you can try out google docs. It's free. How you want to use that spreadsheet is up to you. If it were me I would try to break it up into one week periods. Monday-Sunday ma

  • I have no idea how to use spreadsheets. I know it sounds dumb, but I really never use computers. If something isn't 100% user friendly I am totally lost. I am also away from home most of the time and do everything on my phone or tablet. I can't even te

  • Do you have Excel? Or have access to it? With what you would be doing it wouldn't be very complicated to learn.

It's just a spreadsheet made up of cells.

It would probably look something like this:

  • OK, that makes sense. I don't know if I have Excell, but I have used Google docs before either way.
