Lurker with an EFund question

Hi ~ I lurk a lot and have gotten some good info doing so.  I know I had an old Knot account from years ago, but couldn't figure out the log in or email, so created a new one today to ask this question.

I have what is probably a silly and basic question about an EFund.  Do you view your emergency fund separately than your savings account? I feel like my emergency fund should somehow be separate, but I don't really know what that would be.

Am I just overthinking this?  Is my emergency fund really just my savings account (currently, my savings account is about 3 mos living expenses).

Thanks for any help!

Re: Lurker with an EFund question

  • Our Efund is separate from our savings account.  We have 6 months living expenses in our E-fund, but we still do our regular savings each month. That money is saved up for a new roof on the house, maintenance on our home and cars, insurance, down pay

  • That makes sense, and more like what I was thinking.  Savings would be for routine, more expensive repairs and the EFund would be for living expenses if needed.  So, maybe my question really is, do you have two savings accounts?  Where d

  • We keep them separate. For us emergency fund is not to be touched unless something is  truely an emergency and we can't figure out how else to pay for it that month.

  • Does your CU offer any secondary accounts?  Ours offers what they call "special" accounts. It isn't opening another savings or checking account, but it just shows our savings account separated into 2 categories. Those 2 accounts can be named anyth

  • Thanks to everyone ~ I feel like I'm thinking about this a little more clearly.  I appreciate it!

I will look into whether or not I can have secondary accounts.  I know they used to list S1 and S2 and C1 and C2 years and ye

I have a regular checking account for everyday spending at a local bank, an online checking account through ING/Capital One 360 for my emergency fund, and an online savings account through ING/Capital One 360 for my regular savings.

  • Just to give you an idea, this is what we have:

Checking (local) - Day to day expenses in here.  We keep a minimum of $1000 in here at all time.  Anything over that gets transferred out once all the bills are paid for the month.

  • Thank you, everyone!  What most of you are describing with the three accounts is what makes most sense to me.  I am not terribly savvy about the variety of ways to save, so this is really helpful.  I'm going to look into the ING accounts
