Plane Travel With Carseats

Hello!  I'm looking for some opinions on traveling with carseats.  We are flying to Denver (and then driving to Grand Junction and Cheyenne) with both kids in a couple weeks.  I looked at just renting carseats when we get there but they are $12 per day which is expensive for two carseats for 10 days.  Airtran does say on their website that they will check the carseats for free so I just planned on putting them in contractor garbage bags and checking them.  My question is if the travel bags for the carseats are worth it. I can't see us having to travel by plane with the carseats more than a couple times over the next several years.  I am trying to wrap my head around dragging two carseats, two kids, all our luggage, and a stroller through the airport. I'm going to take our sit and stand stroller so I can stack things on it and let Keefer walk. I will have the carrier for Elsey so she can be strapped to my chest as well.  I've taken Keefer on a few trips to FL by myself but this whole traveling with two kids on flight with a layover to Denver is intimindating. I'm trying to wrap my head around dealing with when we get there too as we land at 10:30 CO time (12:30 our time) and have to get our rental car and get to a hotel. I guess I didn't pick the best flight times...Anyway, any insight any of you can provide would be appreciated.

  • If you check the carseats you wouldn't have to lug through the airport but I've heard they can get really banged around and I'd worry about them losing them. Gate checking would be better IMO but then you have to bring through airport. We got one of th

  • We checked both our car seats on Airtran when going to Atlanta last fall; had zero issues and they weren't damaged at all (and this was during Thanksgiving holiday)

We didn't even use contractor bags - just the airline bags they provided. Actuall

  • We checked our carseat when we flew last year.  It was fine and wasn't damaged at all, and I didn't put it in a bag.

Thanks ladies!  I feel better already about checking the carseats.  I will already have plenty of things to lug through the airport, the more stuff I can check the better.

  • I always check our car seats.  I usually wrap the car seat with an old twin comforter to keep from getting banged around too much (and put the extra diapers and a good bit of her clothes in the seat and strap it in before checking it to cut down o

  • We have checked carseats many times-and I ALWAYS bag them!  I bought the JL Childress Ultimate Car Seat Travel Bag ($39 on Amazon).  It fits our Britax Marathon, and you wear it like a backback and surprisingly it's not heavy at all!  And I
