Advice for cutting grocery bill?

The only place in my budget right now that I feel is high is my grocery bill. It is just my husband and I and our monthly bill is around $450 but has been up to $600! Every month I find myself thinking wtf did we buy?!?!?! I'm thinking now maybe I need to dissect my receipts and make a mini-budget of meats, fruits, veggies, bread, etc so I see where this is going. My husband doesn't even eat that much-- he works in a restaurant so he only eats 1 meal a day at home. He does not like to eat leftovers so maybe we are wasting too much of it. Most of the stuff I buy is on sale, but I tend not to use coupons because I can't ever find them for stuff I buy. And I always shop at Publix (for those of you who know it). Thank you!

Re: Advice for cutting grocery bill?

  • What sort of stuff do you buy?   Can you post a typical grocery receipt?

Make a list of the common things you buy. When the non-perishables go on sale, buy enough to last you for a month or more (until they go on sale again).

  • We shop at Safeway because I can go online and see what is on sale. I based my grocery list on two things one what is on sale and what I need. I stalk up on non pershiables and purchase food in season. I also use coupons to match the items on sale. I alwa
  • Yes, that does seem on the high side. DH and I are in a HCOL area and we spend about 350-400/mo but that is also including all paper products, cleaning supplies, and various household odds and ends. Not sure if you were counting just food, but househol

  • I am not in a particularly expensive area, I live in a suburb of Tampa. And this is food, household supplies, cleaning, but no pet items.  I think my problem is that my husband doesn't eat enough and doesn't eat leftovers so we are wasting too muc

  • Buy your staple items/paper/alcohol/soda in bulk at a Sam's or CostCo and then buy your fresh produce weekly at your local grocery.

  • also, buy store brand or off brand on items that you buy that are name brand.  It does save quite a bit of $$

  • I noticed a couple things. First off, how much per pound is the meat? Do you have a freezer where you can stock up when it is on sale, or do you need to buy week to week? you seem to eat a very healthy, fresh food diet, and that get expensive. I know m

  • I do not have an Aldi near me. I don't have what the pricce per pound on the meat was but I think the turkey was 99 cents and the chicken was 1.29/lb??? Our freezer isn't huge, so I can't stock up a ton, but I can buy a few multiples. Usually I don't buy

  • For high cost items like nuts, I will only buy them when they're on sale or I have a coupon. Check your weekly circulars before going shopping and then meal plan around items that are on sale for that week.

  • One thing I noticed was the whole turkey & chicken. If leftovers don't go over at your house, it seems like a lot of that will be going to waste with two people?

Can you recreate leftovers into a casserole or like PP said,

  • My husband does 90% of the cooking. Not to say I can't cook, I just don't because he is better than I am. I can try to be creative with leftovers and freeze things. I do eat the leftovers. I'll eat them for 4 or 5 days sometimes because he isn't. I would

  • So, if the receipt you posted was a big trip, I guess you need to really look at what those 4/month "smaller" trips are.  Because, if the 125.00 receipt is half the month, you're doing pretty well.  But, what is happening on the receipts that

  • It looks like you eat a lot of fresh produce and meat, unfortunately although healthy its the most expensive stuff to buy.  My boyfriend and I spend about what you do a month.  I also noticed we had a lot of food going to waste. &nb

  • Are you in a position where you need to be saving more money a month or are you just feeling guilty about how much you spend on food?  I used to worry about how much we were spending on food then came to the conclusion that our spending patterns a

  • You make a good point, maple2. We can afford it just fine, I do just feel guilty about how much we are spending and feel like if I can save a little there, that will be more money in the savings account. I talked to my husband about it, and he is all up f

  • I just want to say I could have written this post.  I'm also married to a chef.  He generally only eats 1 meal a day at home.  He works 6 days a week and eats his meals there.  On his only day off we tend to eat out for lunch or din

  • That's funny, I guess this is just the life of a chef's wife :) Yeah he's talked about getting a food saver, but we don't have one yet. I know what you mean about cooking for an army though! The other day he came home with 17 lbs of pork butt!!! Still
