Question for Mommies - Birth Cost

If you don't mind me asking, what was the total cost of giving birth for you? Also, did you get an epidural? I don't "plan" on getting one, so I just want to know if your cost includes that.

I am assuming all or most of you are insured. I am still under my dad's insurance for the time being, and will probably wait until after baby to switch over to my husband's. It's a pretty good plan, everything is mostly covered 80/20. I'm just trying to get an estimate so I'm not completely shocked with a bill, and I'm having a hard time getting a hold of the insurance company to ask them...

Re: Question for Mommies - Birth Cost

  • That does make sense. Right now I have United Healthcare through my dad, which is a PPO, but I haven't been able to find out how much they will cover, etc. Also, since I am his daughter and not his wife, I don't know if there are certain things that wo

  • I had an induction, epidural and c-section and the total was around $20,000 (which included my care for 5 days). Cora's care was around $10,000.

  • i just read through your other reply.

call the insurance company. they will be able to tell you an estimate.

and that may be why pregnancy/l&d wasn't covered for my co worker-because she would have been the daughter of the primary hold

  • I paid about $200 out of pocket. I can't recall what the total bill was though. I got several EOBs partly because different departments billed separately. I did get an epidural so Anesthesia sent their own bill.

  • I paid about $1,000 for my OBGYN. I paid about $1,200 to the hospital for me and about $400 for baby. I got an epi and that cost me $100. All of this is after my insurance.

  • I think my total bill for me and DD was around $18-19k just for labor and delivery - vaginal delivery, no complications, with epi.  My portion was around $1000.  This does not include anything toward my visits with my OB during pregnancy.

  • We paid absolutely nothing.  Nothing for pre-natal care appts. either, not even a co-pay.  Had DD been a boy we would have had to pay a portion if we decided on a circumcision and that is it.  I had a med-free vaginal delivery and was on

  • I had a scheduled c section with a spinal. I'm not sure what the total cost was, since I had other hospital bills from before my delivery, but from the explanation of benefits statments I've gotten, it was around $20k. My spinal itself was $2k and I just

  • Thank you all! I was finally able to get a hold of someone at my current insurance company and they said my deductible has already been met so my total OOP will be no more than $2250, but since I've already paid towards that, it's currently only $1200

  • for us it all went towards the deductible but what the policy doesn't cite is that there is a flat fee to use the facility (and UPMC looooves to charge you to utilize their facilities, that's why you generally get two bills-one for the dr's fees and on

H's work got rid of Highmark and UPMC this year. We have Aetna, and we could have chosen United. Its weird, becuase he works for a big local bank, but I guess they didn't want to deal with the crap that UPMC/Highmark are into right now.
