Birth Classes - WWYD

The hospital that I plan on giving birth at offers the following classes:

Great Expecations (Chilbirth Preparation)

-$75/couple

-Talks about the birth experience, including medical procedures and  breathing techniques.

-Offered either once a week for 6 weeks or over the weekend.

 Baby Basics

-$30/couple

-Talks about newborn care, including dressing and bathing.

A Moveable Feast (Breastfeeding)

-$30/couple

-Goes over breastfeeding, including common concers.

 Anesthesia Options

-Free

-Talks about epidurals and other options for c-section and vaginal birth.

Stork Tours

-Free

-Tour of Birthing Center

So I will obviously be touring the facility, but my question is, when is the best time? Is now too early?

I plan on doing a natural birth, or at least one without an epidural, but should I still take the anesthesia class in case I end up with a c-section? That way I'm educated on what they are giving me?

As far as the rest of the classes go, which ones would you recommend taking? When during your pregnancy would you take them?

Re: Birth Classes - WWYD

  • I would take the Baby Basics and Breastfeeding class.  If you plan to do a natural birth, I would recommend taking a class specific to natural birth - Bradley, hypnobabies, etc.  As far as the anethesia class goes, it's up to you.  If yo

  • I was for a natural birth but baby girls heart rate kept decelerating no matter what position we tried.   I ended up with a csection and wish I had at least some knowledge of what to expect.

  • We are doing them all haha. I am not doing breastfeeding through the hospital, but doing a free meeting through the local la leche league...maybe there is one near you?

  • I would take the Great Expectations class and the breastfeeding one for sure. Depending on how much you/DH know about babies you might want to take the baby basics class as well. I would assume that epidurals and other pain relief options would be discuss

  • I only took a breastfeeding class (around 32 weeks) and a free basic "what happens during childbirth" type class (around 34 weeks) through my OBGYN's office. We went on the hospital tour about one month before my due date.

    I didn't bother with an

  • Our hospital recommended starting classes beginning in 3rd tri. I would take all of those classes you listed, even if you're planning on going med free. I wanted to know everything possible and be as prepared as possible.

  • Yeah now is too early.

I took a breast feeding class that was very helpful and we took a newborn care class that helped DH a lot. I had done a lot of my own research about L&D and between me being a nurse and DN being a paramedic, we di
